University Sets Up Inquiry Committee After Student Complaints Intensify

Bhopal — VIT University, Bhopal, has initiated a formal inquiry after a growing number of students lodged complaints alleging poor food quality, unsafe drinking water, and unhygienic conditions inside campus dining facilities and hostels. The complaints, which circulated widely across internal student groups in recent days, have triggered heightened scrutiny from both university administration and parents.

Students claim that repeated appeals over the past several weeks went unanswered, forcing them to escalate the matter through written petitions and recorded testimonies. Several hostel residents reported instances of stomach infections, foul-smelling water, undercooked food, and lack of cleanliness in mess areas — concerns they describe as part of a “persistent and worsening issue.”

Administration Forms Multi-Member Panel to Investigate

In response to the rising discontent, VIT Bhopal has established a multi-member fact-finding panel to examine the allegations. The panel includes senior faculty, administrative officials, and representatives from the university’s health and sanitation division.

Officials say the team has been instructed to:

Inspect dining halls, kitchens, water filtration units, and storage areas
Review food procurement and hygiene practices
Collect statements from students, wardens, and mess contractors
Submit a preliminary report within a fixed timeframe

University administrators insist the inquiry will be “transparent and outcome-oriented,” promising corrective measures if violations are found.

Students Describe Deepening Concerns

Hostel residents say the issue is not new — but the severity has increased in recent weeks. Several students have documented the problems using photographs and videos, which show unclean utensils, insects near serving stations, and murky tap water in wash basins.

A second-year engineering student told The Vagabond News that “complaints about water contamination were raised multiple times, but no lasting solution was provided.” Others say they have resorted to buying packaged water and food from outside, adding financial strain to families already paying high hostel fees.

Parents have also begun pressing for clarity, with some demanding immediate intervention and strict supervision of food contractors.

Health Incidents Add Urgency to the Investigation

Sources within the campus medical unit confirmed an increase in students seeking treatment for gastrointestinal issues over the past month. While no direct link has yet been officially established, the clustering of similar symptoms among hostel residents has fueled concern.

The inquiry panel is expected to consult medical staff and review case records as part of its assessment.

Administration Promises Action, Students Await Follow-Through

VIT Bhopal’s management has stated that student welfare is its “highest priority” and assured that mess operations will be strengthened. Officials said additional inspections, water-quality testing, and the possibility of revising the existing food-vendor contract are being considered.

Students, however, remain cautious. Many say similar promises were made previously but not implemented fully. They want clear timelines, transparent reporting, and permanent fixes — not temporary adjustments.
