Islamist Jamaat Alliance Plans March to India Border Over Alleged ‘Push-Ins’

Bangladesh’s Islamist party Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and allied opposition groups have announced plans for mass protests and marches toward the India-Bangladesh border over allegations that India is forcibly pushing people across the frontier without formal repatriation procedures.

The demonstrations are scheduled to take place across several border districts, with organizers calling on supporters to form a “human shield” along parts of the international boundary. The protests are also expected to culminate in a larger rally and procession in Dhaka later this week. (India Today)

The move escalates growing diplomatic and political tensions surrounding claims of so-called “push-ins” — allegations that Indian authorities are informally forcing undocumented migrants into Bangladesh outside official bilateral mechanisms. (Reuters)

Jamaat and Opposition Groups Mobilize Border Demonstrations

According to Bangladeshi media reports, the protests are being organized by an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami and supported by the National Citizen Party (NCP), a political movement that emerged from anti-Sheikh Hasina student protests. (Moneycontrol)

At a press conference in Dhaka, alliance leaders accused India’s Border Security Force of carrying out illegal deportations and border violence against Bangladeshi nationals.

Hamidur Rahman Azad, a senior Jamaat leader and coordinator of the alliance, announced that rallies would be staged at key border points on June 12, followed by a major demonstration in the capital on June 15. (The Daily Star)

The alliance also urged Bangladeshis living near the frontier to gather in large numbers to resist what organizers described as aggressive cross-border actions.

India and Bangladesh Exchange Border Accusations

The controversy comes after several recent incidents along the more than 4,000-kilometer India-Bangladesh border.

Bangladesh’s Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) previously accused Indian authorities of attempting multiple unauthorized crossings involving individuals allegedly pushed toward Bangladeshi territory. (Reuters)

Indian authorities have maintained that they are dealing with undocumented migration and border security through established procedures.

The issue has become politically sensitive in both countries amid broader debates over migration, border security, and rising nationalism.

Border Politics Intensify Ahead of Bangladesh Elections

Analysts say the protests reflect the increasingly influential role of Islamist and nationalist political groups in Bangladesh ahead of the country’s evolving political transition and upcoming elections. (Wikipedia)

Jamaat-e-Islami has expanded its political activity in recent months and has attempted to position itself as a major opposition force following political upheaval in Bangladesh after the fall of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government. (Wikipedia)

Indian and Bangladeshi officials are continuing diplomatic discussions regarding border management and repatriation procedures, though no major breakthrough has yet been announced publicly.

Security agencies on both sides of the border are expected to remain on high alert during the planned demonstrations.
