Restaurants Report Supply Disruptions in Major Cities
MUMBAI — Restaurants and small food businesses in Mumbai and Bengaluru are facing disruptions due to a shortage of commercial Liquefied Petroleum Gas cylinders, forcing some eateries to reduce operations or temporarily close kitchens.
Restaurant associations in both cities said the shortage began emerging in early March 2026 as deliveries of commercial LPG cylinders became delayed or limited.
Many restaurants rely heavily on LPG cylinders for cooking, particularly small establishments that do not have access to pipeline gas connections.
Owners of several eateries reported that scheduled cylinder deliveries were postponed for several days, leaving kitchens struggling to maintain normal service.
Impact on Food Businesses and Daily Operations
Restaurant operators say the shortage has created immediate operational challenges.
Some establishments reported switching to alternative cooking methods or reducing menu items that require heavy fuel usage. Others said they were forced to close kitchens temporarily while waiting for cylinder deliveries.
Industry representatives noted that small restaurants and street-food vendors are particularly vulnerable because they often keep only a limited number of cylinders in reserve.
Food delivery businesses have also reported delays as restaurants struggle to maintain normal cooking capacity.
Restaurant associations warned that prolonged shortages could affect thousands of small businesses that depend on LPG fuel for daily operations.
Possible Causes Behind the Supply Disruption
Officials and industry groups say the shortage appears to be linked to logistical disruptions in cylinder distribution and rising demand for commercial LPG supplies.
Some distributors have reported delays in transportation and refilling operations, which may have slowed the movement of cylinders to urban markets.
In addition, restaurant associations said the demand for commercial LPG cylinders has increased in recent months as more businesses returned to full capacity following earlier economic slowdowns.
Authorities have not yet confirmed a single cause for the supply shortage but said the situation is being closely monitored.
Government Assures Restoration of Supply
Officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas said steps are being taken to restore normal supplies.
Government representatives stated that oil marketing companies have been directed to increase the distribution of commercial LPG cylinders to affected areas, particularly in large metropolitan regions.
Officials also said additional supply logistics are being arranged to ensure restaurants and businesses receive cylinders without further delays.
The ministry emphasized that the shortage is expected to be temporary and that supply chains are being adjusted to address the demand surge.
Restaurant Associations Seek Long-Term Solutions
Industry groups have urged authorities to take longer-term steps to prevent similar shortages in the future.
Restaurant associations in Mumbai and Bengaluru have called for improved coordination between LPG distributors and commercial customers, including better forecasting of demand and more transparent delivery schedules.
Some restaurant owners have also suggested expanding access to piped natural gas (PNG) connections, which could reduce reliance on cylinder deliveries.
For now, businesses are awaiting the restoration of normal LPG supply as the government works with distributors to resolve the disruption.
