New York Giants vs. Washington Commanders: 3 reasons for optimism

The New York Giants will begin their season on the road against the division rival Washington Commanders on Sunday at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Given their much-discussed schedule and its level of difficulty, the Giants should have a sense of urgency to start the season with a win.

Washington is coming off an NFC Championship Game appearance and is certainly no exception to the difficult opponents on New York’s Schedule. Washington swept the season series in 2024, although the Giants probably should have won the first game if not for self-inflicted errors.

Here are three reasons for optimism ahead of the Week 1 matchup between the Giants and Commanders.

Different Giants vibes in 2025

There is just a different feel to the team entering this season. There was a major overhaul in the quarterback room during the offseason, which has fans excited about what Russell Wilson can do to the Giants’ offense.

The Giants’ defense is also much improved on paper.

However, perhaps the biggest difference is the culture that has been talked about surrounding the team and the “culture” in the locker room that Wilson has referenced. The Giants certainly seem to be confident with where the team is coming into the season and hope it translates to wins early and often.

Improved defense

There is significant hype surrounding the Giants’ front-seven ahead of this season. They added what many consider to be a generational talent in Abdul Carter with the third overall pick, combining him with an already very talented defensive line that includes Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, and Kayvon Thibodeaux.

Lost in the excitement of the defensive line are two key free agent additions in the secondary. The Giants added Jevon Holland and Paulson Adebo in free agency, which should help a youthful defensive backfield.

The Giants will need them against the improved receiving corps of the Commanders, which now includes both Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel.

Nabers, Year 2

Malik Nabers had the first double-digit reception game of his career in Week 2 last season against the Commanders. He went for 127 yards and a touchdown on 10 receptions in the game.

The Giants’ rookie sensation added another nine receptions for 59 yards in the second matchup between the two teams. Needless to say, the star receiver is comfortable playing against the division rivals.

Having Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback should only help Nabers improve in his sophomore season.
