Volcanic fragments and molten lava were hurled into the air as the Kīlauea volcano erupted again on Hawaii’s Big Island, sending showers of rock and ash across areas surrounding the summit crater. The eruption occurred inside Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park and was confirmed by scientists monitoring activity at the site.

According to the United States Geological Survey and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the eruption began with increased seismic activity followed by lava fountains rising from vents within Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Scientists reported that powerful lava fountains produced fragments of molten rock that cooled and solidified as they fell back to the ground around the crater. These volcanic fragments, sometimes referred to as “volcanic bombs,” can vary widely in size.

Monitoring instruments detected strong tremors shortly before the eruption intensified. Researchers said gas emissions and rising magma pressure beneath the summit contributed to the explosive bursts.

Teams from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory continued to monitor the eruption through seismic sensors, satellite imagery, and gas measurement equipment. Scientists said Kīlauea is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and eruptions can occur frequently.
