US Seeks Death Penalty for Man Accused of Killing Two Israeli Embassy Staff Members in Washington

The United States Department of Justice has formally announced its intention to seek the death penalty against Elias Rodriguez, the man accused of fatally shooting two Israeli Embassy staff members outside the Capital Jewish Museum in what federal prosecutors describe as a politically motivated hate crime.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said the federal government would pursue the maximum legal punishment, arguing that the killings constituted an act of ideological violence targeting diplomats and members of the Jewish community.

The case has intensified security concerns surrounding diplomatic missions and rising tensions linked to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Victims Identified as Israeli Embassy Employees

Authorities identified the victims as Yaron Lischinsky, 30, an Israeli citizen employed as an embassy researcher, and Sarah Milgrim, 26, an American citizen working in the embassy’s public diplomacy department.

According to prosecutors, the shooting occurred as attendees were leaving an event at the museum in downtown Washington.

Federal investigators allege that Rodriguez traveled from Chicago to Washington carrying a handgun in checked luggage before waiting outside the venue. Court filings state that he opened fire on a group exiting the building and continued shooting after the victims fell to the ground.

Officials described the attack as deliberate and premeditated.

Prosecutors Cite Ideological Motivation

Federal prosecutors said Rodriguez made statements immediately after the attack indicating political and ideological motives.

According to court documents, the suspect shouted “Free Palestine” following the shooting and later told law enforcement officers that he acted “for Palestine” and “for Gaza.”

The Federal Bureau of Investigation stated that Rodriguez appeared to have acted alone and was allegedly motivated by anti-Zionist and pro-Palestinian extremist beliefs.

Investigators also said the suspect had expressed admiration online for a U.S. Air Force member who died after self-immolating outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington in 2024 during a protest connected to the Gaza conflict.

Authorities stressed that the investigation remains ongoing and that officials continue reviewing digital evidence, travel records, and online activity connected to the suspect.

Justice Department Pursues Capital Punishment

Rodriguez faces multiple federal charges, including the murder of foreign officials, hate crimes resulting in death, and firearms-related offenses.

In the formal notice seeking capital punishment, prosecutors argued that the targeted nature of the killings and the alleged ideological bias behind the attack justified pursuing the death penalty under federal law.

Defense attorneys reportedly met with Justice Department officials in an effort to prevent prosecutors from seeking execution, but the department ultimately moved forward with the filing.

Legal experts noted that federal death penalty cases often involve lengthy pretrial litigation and appeals processes.

Political and Diplomatic Reactions

The killings prompted condemnation from U.S. and Israeli officials, who described the attack as antisemitic violence and an assault on diplomatic personnel.

Security around Jewish institutions and Israeli diplomatic facilities in several American cities was increased following the shooting.

Civil rights organizations and community leaders also warned against escalating political extremism and hate-driven violence connected to international conflicts.
