Early-morning walks are seeing a sharp resurgence across Indian cities, as urban residents increasingly prioritise physical fitness and mental well-being amid hectic work schedules and rising stress levels.

Parks, promenades, and residential walking tracks in major cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Chennai are witnessing higher footfall before sunrise, with walkers ranging from young professionals to senior citizens. Health experts say the trend reflects a growing awareness of preventive healthcare and the long-term benefits of simple, consistent physical activity.

Doctors note that brisk walking improves cardiovascular health, helps regulate blood sugar, and reduces anxiety—benefits that have gained prominence in post-pandemic urban life. Many walkers also cite mental clarity and stress relief as key motivations.

“People are realising that fitness doesn’t need expensive gyms,” said a Bengaluru-based physician. “A 30-minute walk every morning can significantly improve overall health.”

Urban planners say the trend has renewed focus on public green spaces, with citizens demanding better-lit parks, walking tracks, and safer pedestrian infrastructure.
