President Donald Trump said he held “very good talks” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the United States intensifies diplomatic efforts to advance a negotiated settlement to the war in Ukraine, according to official statements released on Thursday.
The discussions come amid a renewed push by the United States to shape a framework for ending the nearly four-year conflict, which has devastated large parts of Ukraine and reshaped global security and energy markets.
‘Very Productive’ Discussions
Speaking after the talks, President Donald Trump described the exchange with Zelenskyy as constructive and forward-looking, signaling progress in aligning Kyiv and Washington on next steps toward a potential agreement.
“We had very good talks,” the president said, without disclosing specific details of any proposals discussed. Administration officials said the conversation focused on security guarantees, territorial issues, and the conditions under which Ukraine could enter formal negotiations with Moscow.
The White House emphasized that the United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine while also seeking a diplomatic outcome that ends active hostilities.
U.S. Push for a Negotiated Settlement
Senior U.S. officials said Washington is working with European allies to develop what they described as a “realistic pathway” toward a deal, one that balances Ukraine’s sovereignty with broader regional stability. While the administration has not publicly outlined the terms under consideration, officials acknowledged that discussions include ceasefire mechanisms, phased sanctions relief, and long-term security arrangements.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly argued that the conflict must be resolved through negotiation rather than prolonged warfare, framing diplomacy as essential to preventing further loss of life and economic disruption.
“The goal is peace that lasts,” a U.S. official said. “That requires serious engagement from all sides.”
Kyiv’s Position
Zelenskyy’s office confirmed the talks and described them as “substantive,” noting that Ukraine continues to insist on firm security guarantees and international backing as prerequisites for any deal. Ukrainian officials have consistently rejected proposals that would leave the country vulnerable to future aggression.
In a statement, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine seeks “a just and sustainable peace,” adding that discussions with the United States remain central to Kyiv’s diplomatic strategy.
International Reactions
The renewed U.S. engagement has drawn close attention from European capitals, many of which are grappling with the economic and political consequences of the prolonged war. NATO allies have welcomed Washington’s efforts to coordinate diplomacy, while stressing that any agreement must be acceptable to Ukraine.
Russia has not publicly commented on the latest talks but has previously said it is open to negotiations under certain conditions, which Ukraine and its allies have described as unacceptable.
What Comes Next
U.S. officials said further discussions with Ukrainian leaders and allied governments are expected in the coming weeks. While no formal timeline has been announced, the administration indicated that momentum is building toward structured negotiations.
Despite cautious optimism, analysts warn that significant obstacles remain, including deep mistrust between the warring parties and unresolved questions about territory and security.
For now, President Donald Trump’s characterization of the talks as “very good” suggests a diplomatic opening — one the United States appears determined to pursue as it presses for an end to the war.
