Milan â Fatal Derailment During Morning Service
At least one person was killed and dozens injured after a tram derailed in Milan on Sunday morning, according to Italian emergency authorities.
The accident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m. local time near a busy intersection in the northeastern part of the city. Witnesses reported hearing a loud screech before the tram left the tracks and partially overturned, coming to rest against a curb and light pole.
Emergency services, including firefighters and paramedics, responded within minutes. The victim, described by authorities as a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released the individualâs identity pending notification of next of kin.
Dozens Hospitalized
Italyâs emergency medical service confirmed that at least 34 people were transported to nearby hospitals with injuries ranging from minor cuts and bruises to fractures. Several passengers were taken to San Raffaele Hospital for further evaluation.
Local officials stated that none of the injured were reported to be in life-threatening condition as of Sunday afternoon.
Photographs from the scene showed the tram car tilted at an angle, with shattered windows and debris scattered along the street. Rescue teams assisted passengers out of the damaged carriage while police cordoned off the area.
Investigation Underway
The Milan public prosecutorâs office has opened an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment. Preliminary assessments suggest that a mechanical failure or track defect may have contributed, but authorities cautioned that it is too early to draw conclusions.
Transport officials from the municipal transit operator, Azienda Trasporti Milanesi (ATM), said they are cooperating fully with investigators and have launched an internal technical review.
Service along the affected tram line was suspended, and replacement buses were deployed to minimize disruption.
Eyewitness Accounts
Passengers described moments of confusion and panic as the tram jolted violently before leaving the tracks. âIt felt like we were thrown sideways,â one commuter told local media. âPeople were shouting and trying to hold on.â
Shop owners nearby said they rushed to assist injured passengers before emergency crews arrived.
Safety Concerns
Milanâs tram network, one of the oldest in Europe, carries thousands of commuters daily. While derailments are rare, the incident has raised concerns about infrastructure maintenance and system safety.
City officials said a comprehensive inspection of nearby track segments would be conducted as a precautionary measure.
Official Response
The Mayor of Milan expressed condolences to the victimâs family and wished a swift recovery to the injured. Italian Transport Ministry representatives stated they are monitoring the investigation and will evaluate whether broader safety reviews are necessary.
Authorities are expected to release additional details as technical assessments progress.
