A Utah judge sentenced children’s book author Kouri Richins to life in prison without the possibility of parole on May 13, 2026, for the fentanyl poisoning murder of her husband, Eric Richins.
Delivering the sentence in Park City, Utah, Third District Judge Richard Mrazik described Richins as “simply too dangerous to ever be free” as he imposed the maximum penalty allowed under state law.
The case drew international attention after Richins published a children’s book about grief following her husband’s death before later being arrested and charged with his murder.
Judge Imposes Multiple Consecutive Sentences
Following her conviction on all charges by a Summit County jury in March 2026, Judge Mrazik ordered several severe consecutive prison terms.
Richins received:
- Life in prison without parole for aggravated murder
- Five years to life for attempted murder linked to an earlier alleged poisoning attempt on Valentine’s Day 2022
- Additional prison terms for insurance fraud convictions
- Up to five years for forgery-related charges
The sentencing hearing coincided with what would have been Eric Richins’ 44th birthday.
Prosecutors Detailed Financially Motivated Scheme
According to evidence presented during trial and reporting from The New York Times and ABC4 Utah, prosecutors argued that Richins murdered her husband by secretly placing a massive dose of illicit fentanyl into a Moscow Mule cocktail.
Authorities alleged she administered roughly five times the lethal amount of fentanyl.
Prosecutors said the killing was financially motivated, pointing to mounting debt tied to Richins’ house-flipping business and multiple life insurance policies she allegedly opened without her husband’s knowledge.
Investigators testified that Richins believed she would inherit an estate worth more than $4 million following Eric Richins’ death.
Affair and Digital Evidence Revealed During Trial
Court proceedings also revealed text messages and digital evidence suggesting Richins was involved in a relationship with another man while allegedly planning a future independent of her husband.
The prosecution portrayed the case as a carefully planned effort driven by financial desperation and personal motives.
Children’s Statements Shocked Courtroom
Some of the most emotional moments during sentencing came from victim impact statements delivered on behalf of Richins’ children, now ages 11 and 13.
Statements read by social workers described fear and emotional trauma experienced by the boys.
One son stated, “You took away my dad for no reason other than greed,” while both children reportedly expressed concern for their safety if their mother were ever released from prison.
Richins Maintains Innocence
Appearing emotional but defiant in court, Richins continued to deny responsibility for the murder.
She called the verdict “an absolute lie” and directly addressed her absent children, saying, “Please just don’t give up on me.”
Defense attorneys confirmed they plan to appeal both the conviction and the sentence.
