The death toll in a major road accident in Chitradurga district rose to seven on Friday after another injured victim succumbed to injuries, police said.
According to the Karnataka Police, the collision occurred late Thursday night on National Highway 48, involving a passenger vehicle and a heavy goods truck. The impact was severe, leaving multiple occupants trapped inside the mangled vehicle.
Five people died on the spot, while two others who were critically injured were rushed to the district hospital in Chitradurga. One of them died during treatment early Friday morning, taking the toll to seven, police officials confirmed.
“A high-speed collision led to extensive damage to the vehicle,” a senior police officer said. “Preliminary investigation suggests rash driving, but we are examining all angles, including visibility and road conditions.”
Police said rescue operations were carried out with the help of local residents, fire and emergency services, and highway patrol teams. Traffic on the busy stretch of NH-48 was temporarily disrupted as cranes were used to clear the wreckage.
The identities of the deceased are being verified, and families are being informed, officials said. Post-mortem examinations are underway at the government hospital, and a case has been registered.
Road accidents remain a major concern in Karnataka, particularly on high-speed national highways passing through district limits. Authorities have urged motorists to adhere to speed limits and exercise caution, especially during night travel.
Further investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
