The fatal ICE shooting in Minneapolis that killed Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old U.S. citizen, occurred during a federal immigration operation primarily focused on Somali immigrants, according to U.S. officials and documents reviewed by investigators.
The incident took place on January 6, 2026, at approximately 7:30 pm, in a residential area of south Minneapolis, Minnesota, during an enforcement action carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Operation Targeted Somali Community, Officials Say
Federal officials confirmed that the broader operation underway at the time of the shooting was part of an immigration enforcement and fraud investigation involving members of the Somali immigrant community, though they stressed that Renee Good was not the target of the operation.
According to officials familiar with the planning, the operation focused on alleged immigration-related violations and financial fraud cases connected to individuals of Somali origin, part of a wider federal initiative extending beyond Minnesota.
“Ms. Good was not a subject of the investigation,” a federal law enforcement official said. “She was not named in any warrant or enforcement action.”
What Happened That Evening
During the operation, ICE agents encountered Renee Good near a vehicle. At some point during the interaction, an ICE agent discharged a firearm, striking her. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Federal authorities have claimed the agent fired in self-defence, alleging a perceived threat. However, Minnesota state officials and Minneapolis city leaders have questioned that account, citing video footage that does not clearly show an imminent danger.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation, which includes a review of body-camera footage, civilian video, forensic evidence, and witness statements. The ICE agent involved has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome.
Community Impact and Rising Tensions
The disclosure that the operation focused on Somali immigrants has intensified concern among Somali American communities, both in Minneapolis and nationally. Community leaders say the revelation adds context to a surge in misinformation, harassment, and false allegations of fraud circulating online since the shooting.
“This has put an entire community under suspicion for something it did not do,” said a Somali American community organiser in Minneapolis. “An innocent woman lost her life, and now people are using the operation’s focus to spread fear and lies.”
Officials Urge Restraint
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have both called for transparency and warned against stigmatising immigrant communities.
Law enforcement officials stressed that investigations target individuals, not communities, and cautioned against drawing broad conclusions about Somali immigrants based on the nature of the federal operation.
Broader Scrutiny of ICE Operations
The Minneapolis shooting has been identified as the ninth ICE-related shooting since September, adding to growing scrutiny of how federal immigration operations are conducted in residential neighbourhoods, particularly without coordination with local authorities.
Civil rights groups have renewed calls for:
Clearer operational oversight
Greater coordination with local governments
Public accountability when lethal force is used
Investigation Continues
The FBI has not provided a timeline for completing its investigation. Officials said further details, including the agent’s identity and final findings, will be released once reviews are complete.
As Minneapolis continues to mourn Renee Good, the circumstances surrounding her death—and the nature of the operation underway that night—have become a focal point in the national debate over immigration enforcement, use of force, and community trust.
