Since the early days of the NFL Network, we knew Seth Joyner would be opinionated. He was one of the hosts of a flagship show during the station’s early days. These days, he’s somewhere more fitting. The Philadelphia Eagles legend offers his theories back home. Stationed in the City of Brotherly Love, we probably see Joyner more now than we did when he was still playing.
One of his common stops is the Tastykake studio. Once weekly, he hangs out with 94 WIP-FM’s Morning Show. No one has to be told what the subject matter is when he does, do they?
The Eagles are struggling, particularly on offense, and the worst performance of Jalen Hurts’ career has put both him and this team under a microscope. The legend sees issues, and recently he fixated on the offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo.
“You tell me, how many plays that we run and have success with, do you see us flip the formation (and) run it on the other side? How many times do you see it again? It’s almost like he’s got this bag, (a) grab bag of plays. And (Kevin Patullo says) ‘I’m just gonna pick (randomly). Let’s run this one! Oh, let me throw that one away, because we’re not gonna run that one again.’ … It doesn’t make any sense.”
Joyner has never hidden his feelings. It simply isn’t who he is. That blunt honesty has endeared him to some Eagles fans and pushed others away.
He’s the mean uncle at the barbecue: sometimes too negative for the room, occasionally dead-on with his assessments. So you decide. Is his criticism of Kevin Patullo warranted, or is he crossing the line? Joyner certainly hasn’t held back on the Eagles’ offensive coordinator.
“The things that they succeed with, they don’t consistently come back with it, and they don’t have other plays that are built off of the things that they have success with. They’re almost like one-offs. And he’s got his sheet in front of him, ‘Alright, let’s run this.’ And they run it, and every other coordinator that you see in the National Football League, what do they do? They got a pen in their hand, and they’re taking notes. Do you see our offensive coordinator doing that kind of thing?”
Debate continues, and the flame surrounding Coach Patullo is running on gasoline. A win will calm things, and so will a good offensive performance. It can’t come soon enough. The emotional health of an entire media and fan base may be contingent on both happening sooner rather than later.
