Raiders place Jackson Powers-Johnson on IR, sign former 1st round LB and kicker

Tuesday the Raiders made their decision to send Jackson Powers-Johnson to injured reserve official. JPJ suffered an ankle injury in last Thursday’s game in Denver and it quickly because apparent that the injury was serious and would have him out “a while”, as head coach Pete Carroll said after the game.

With that move, the Raiders made two other transactions.

To fill the open roster spot, they signed LB Jamin Davis off the practice squad.

Davis was a first round pick by the Washington Commanders in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Kentucky. He was a full time starter for three seasons before losing his starting job and was released midway through the 2024 season. A brief stint with the Packers and then four games with the Vikings last season before joining the Jets. And failing to make their roster out of camp.

Replacing Davis’s spot on the practice squad was kicker Greg Joseph. The native South African has spent parts of the past seven seasons with multiple different NFL teams. His longest stint being three full seasons in Minnesota.

As it happens, it was supposed to be Carlson who was the kicker in Minnesota during those years, but the former fifth round pick was released after two games and signed with the Raiders.

Lately, however, Carlson has been struggling of late, having already missed five kicks this season in nine games — three of which were the difference in the game. He’s also had his issues with missing the landing zone on kickoffs. So, maybe Joseph’s addition is to light a fire under Carlson for him to get his head right.
