Authorities have identified the man who was fatally struck by a Frontier Airlines aircraft at Denver International Airport as 41-year-old Michael Mott.
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner ruled Mott’s death a suicide following an investigation into the May 8 incident, which occurred during the takeoff roll of Frontier Flight 4345 bound for Los Angeles.
Officials said the aircraft, an Airbus A321 carrying 231 passengers and crew members, struck Mott shortly after he breached airport security and entered an active runway area.
Security Breach Occurred Minutes Before Collision
According to investigators, the incident happened around 11:10 p.m. local time on Friday night.
Authorities stated that Mott climbed over an eight-foot perimeter fence topped with barbed wire before entering restricted airport property. Surveillance records reviewed by investigators reportedly showed the breach took approximately 15 seconds.
Officials said Mott was struck by the aircraft roughly two minutes later while walking onto active Runway 17L.
Airport ground detection sensors triggered a security alarm following the breach. However, investigators said an airport operations employee initially believed the movement captured on surveillance cameras involved a herd of deer and did not immediately identify a person on the runway.
Frontier Flight Aborted Takeoff
The aircraft involved, Frontier Flight 4345, was accelerating for departure when the collision occurred.
Pilots immediately aborted takeoff procedures after the impact, according to airport officials. The strike reportedly caused an engine fire and smoke inside portions of the cabin.
Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides while airport rescue crews responded to the scene.
Authorities stated that no passengers suffered life-threatening injuries. However, 12 individuals reported minor injuries during the evacuation, and five people were transported to local hospitals for medical evaluation.
The aircraft sustained damage during the incident and remained grounded following the emergency response operation.
Federal Agencies Investigating Incident
The National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration, and Transportation Security Administration are jointly investigating the incident.
Investigators are examining the airport’s perimeter security systems, emergency response timeline, and evacuation procedures carried out after the collision.
Airport officials confirmed that Mott was not employed by the airport or the airline.
Authorities also stated that he had prior contact with law enforcement agencies in the Denver metropolitan area, though additional details regarding those interactions were not publicly disclosed.
Questions Raised Over Airport Security
The incident has prompted renewed scrutiny of airport perimeter security and runway intrusion prevention systems at major U.S. airports.
Aviation experts noted that unauthorized runway access incidents are relatively rare but can pose serious risks to passengers, crews, and airport operations.
Denver International Airport officials said they are cooperating fully with federal investigators and reviewing security procedures following the breach.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not announced whether additional security measures will be implemented at the airport.
