Sooner or later, Spencer Rattler is going to get the New Orleans Saints into the win column. It just hasn’t happened yet. Or in any of his first eight games. Rattler did well against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, completing 25 of 34 passes for 207 yards and three touchdowns; it was his first career game with multiple touchdown passes. But it wasn’t enough to win the day.
And now Rattler is in sole possession of one of the Saints’ least-coveted team records. He’s 0-8. No other quarterback has lost more games before getting their first career win in franchise history. The closest real case would be Billy Kilmer, who went 0-5 between the 1967 and 1968 seasons before getting a win.
But a better comparison might be Danny Wuerffel, whose teams went 0-7 until they got in the win column; Wuerffel started just two of those matchups but got on the field in five other games, all losses. That’s also the case for two quarterbacks who went 0-6 as part-time passers, in Gary Cuozzo (starting four times) and Bobby Douglass (two starts).
No matter how you slice it, Rattler is stuck with the longest losing streak to start his Saints career of any quarterback in team history. It’s not a good place to be. Hopefully he can shake it off and get into the win column next week against the Seattle Seahawks. If it stretches out further to an 0-10 streak, you have to think the Saints start discussing a change internally. Tyler Shough is waiting.
