NFL playoff picture: Rams still chasing one team for NFC’s top seed

No team in the NFC is hotter than the Los Angeles Rams right now. They’ve won five games in a row, including two victories against the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks in the last two weeks. They’re almost unanimously viewed as the best team in football based on this week’s power rankings, but they’re still not the top seed in the NFC.

They’re chasing one of the two teams that beat them this season: the Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams are sitting at 8-2 through Week 11, but Philadelphia owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rams thanks to its Week 3 win.

Here’s a look at the current playoff picture heading into Week 12, which features three NFC West teams and two from the NFC North.

NFC playoff picture and standings

  1. Eagles: 8-2 (NFC East)
  2. Rams: 8-2 (NFC West)
  3. Bears: 7-3 (NFC North)
  4. Buccaneers: 6-4 (NFC South)
  5. Seahawks: 7-3 (WC)
  6. Packers: 6-3-1 (WC)
  7. 49ers: 7-4 (WC)

Because the Eagles beat the Rams in Week 3, Los Angeles will need to finish at least one game better than Philadelphia in order to take the No. 1 seed. If both teams finish tied atop the conference at the end of the season, the Eagles will edge out the Rams thanks to the head-to-head tiebreaker.

As of now, the Rams are one game ahead of the Seahawks in the NFC West and also own the tiebreaker over them after beating Seattle in Week 11. They’ll meet again in Week 16, which could decide the division if the two teams remain close in the next four weeks.

The 49ers are still lurking at 7-4, too; they split the season series with the Rams so the next tiebreaker will be division record, should the two of them finish the season tied.
