An air ambulance operating in Jharkhand requested a route deviation minutes before it crashed, killing all those on board, according to preliminary information shared by aviation authorities. The fatal accident occurred on Monday afternoon near Ranchi district, prompting a multi-agency investigation.
Officials confirmed that the helicopter, operated by a private medical evacuation service, was en route to transport a patient when it lost contact with air traffic control. The aircraft went down in a semi-forested area approximately 25 kilometers from Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand.
Local police and disaster response teams reached the crash site shortly after villagers reported a loud explosion followed by smoke rising from the area. Authorities confirmed multiple fatalities but have not yet released the official passenger manifest pending family notification.
Route Deviation Request Confirmed
A senior official from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that the pilot had requested a route deviation shortly before the crash. The reason for the request has not been formally disclosed.
According to initial communications data reviewed by investigators, the deviation request was made due to reported weather concerns in the flight path. Meteorological data from the India Meteorological Department indicated patchy low visibility conditions in parts of the Ranchi region at the time.
Air traffic control acknowledged the deviation request. However, investigators are still examining cockpit voice recordings and flight data, where available, to determine the sequence of events that followed.
Investigation by Multiple Agencies
The DGCA has launched a formal probe into the incident, with support from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB). Officials stated that a technical team has been dispatched to collect debris samples, review maintenance records, and analyze air traffic communications.
The Jharkhand Police confirmed that the crash site has been secured and forensic teams are assisting aviation investigators. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also deployed to assist in recovery operations.
State government officials expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured full cooperation with the investigation.
Safety and Operational Review
Air ambulances play a critical role in medical emergencies, particularly in regions where rapid ground transport is limited. However, aviation experts note that helicopter operations can be highly sensitive to sudden weather changes, terrain, and visibility constraints.
Authorities have not confirmed whether mechanical failure, weather conditions, pilot decision-making, or other factors contributed to the crash. No prior safety violations related to the operator have been publicly reported at this time.
The DGCA stated that a preliminary report is expected within weeks, with a final investigation report to follow after detailed analysis. Until then, officials cautioned against speculation regarding the cause.
Further updates will be provided as investigators release verified findings.
