Jets rookie QB Brady Cook wasn’t ready for snaps and it showed

New York Jets rookie undrafted quarterback Brady Cook entered Sunday’s Week 14 game versus the Miami Dolphins as the backup to Tyrod Taylor. Justin Fields suffered a knee injury at practice earlier in the week and was ruled out. Disaster struck when Taylor exited the contest due to a groin injury, prompting Cook to enter the game.

Cook wasn’t ready for NFL snaps and it showed. The rookie UDFA out of Missouri completed 14-of-30 passing attempts for 163 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions. Cook was sacked six times and fumbled twice as the Jets were embarrassed 34-10 by the Dolphins.

Every basic and advanced metric proves how ill-prepared Cook was to make his debut. He completed under 50 percent of his passes and committed multiple turnovers. Cook was fortunate that the Jets recovered both of his fumbles, or he would’ve had a historic four-turnover debut game.

In fairness, Cook didn’t receive any first-team reps at practice. Asking an undrafted rookie signal-caller to make his debut somewhat unexpectedly without having any chemistry with his teammates is a tall ask. Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver took full advantage of the opportunity.

Fields and Taylor will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s upcoming Week 15 matchup versus the Jacksonville Jaguars. If both Fields and Taylor are ruled OUT, Cook could make his first career start. Hopefully he’d be better prepared this time around.
