India ushered in New Year 2026 under tight security arrangements, extensive traffic restrictions, and severe winter conditions, as authorities across major cities stepped up measures to ensure public safety amid large gatherings and plunging temperatures.

From metropolitan centres to tourist hubs, police forces, disaster response teams, and civic agencies remained on high alert through the night, balancing crowd control with emergency preparedness as celebrations unfolded across the country.

Heightened Security in Major Cities

Security was significantly reinforced in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, and Chennai, where large crowds gathered at public landmarks, shopping districts, and entertainment zones.

Police deployed additional personnel, rapid response teams, and surveillance units, including CCTV monitoring and drone patrols in sensitive areas. Random vehicle checks, breathalyser tests, and intensified night patrols were carried out to deter drunk driving and other violations.

Senior police officials said the focus was on preventing overcrowding, ensuring women’s safety, and responding swiftly to medical or law-and-order emergencies.

Traffic Curbs and Diversions

To manage congestion and pedestrian movement, authorities imposed temporary traffic curbs and diversions near popular celebration spots. In Delhi, restrictions were enforced around Connaught Place and central districts, while Mumbai saw controlled access near Marine Drive, Gateway of India, and major arterial roads.

Public advisories urged citizens to use public transport, follow designated routes, and avoid non-essential travel during peak hours. Metro and suburban rail services operated on extended or holiday schedules to accommodate late-night commuters.

Despite the curbs, traffic snarls were reported in pockets, particularly near entertainment hubs, as thousands stepped out to mark the occasion.

Biting Cold Grips North India

Adding to the challenges, a severe cold wave swept across large parts of northern India. Temperatures dipped sharply in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, with dense fog reducing visibility in several regions.

The India Meteorological Department warned of persistently low temperatures and advised caution, especially for early-morning travellers. Homeless shelters were kept open overnight, and state authorities distributed blankets in vulnerable areas.

In hill states such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, freezing conditions and icy roads prompted local administrations to issue travel advisories.

Celebrations Continue Despite Conditions

Despite the cold and security restrictions, celebrations continued across the country. Restaurants, hotels, and entertainment venues reported strong footfall, while religious places saw devotees offering prayers for the year ahead.

Tourist destinations such as Goa, Rajasthan, and parts of Kerala witnessed near-capacity crowds, with local administrations deploying additional police and medical teams to manage the influx.

Authorities Urge Caution

Officials across states appealed for restraint and responsible behaviour, particularly on the roads. Emergency services, including ambulances and fire brigades, remained on standby throughout the night.

“Public cooperation was crucial in managing crowds and ensuring a safe New Year,” a senior official said, adding that overall celebrations passed without any major untoward incidents in most cities.

Looking Ahead

As India settles into the first day of 2026, authorities said normal traffic movement and security deployment would be gradually scaled back, though weather-related advisories remain in effect in several regions.

The New Year began with caution and celebration intertwined — marked by festive spirit, vigilant policing, and the unmistakable chill of winter gripping much of the country.
