The United States Department of Defense has begun releasing hundreds of declassified documents related to unidentified anomalous phenomena, commonly known as UFOs, providing the public with one of the largest official disclosures of unexplained aerial incidents in American history.

The release, announced on May 8, 2026, includes an initial batch of 162 files containing videos, photographs, military reports, witness statements, and government transcripts dating from the 1940s through 2025.

Officials said the disclosures were ordered following a directive from Donald Trump calling for greater transparency regarding unidentified aerial phenomena and historical government records linked to extraterrestrial investigations.

The records involve material from agencies including NASA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and branches of the U.S. military.

Apollo Mission Transcripts Reveal Strange Light Sightings

Among the most closely examined documents are NASA mission transcripts from the Apollo era.

According to released records, Buzz Aldrin reported observing a “fairly bright light source” during the Apollo 11 Moon Landing mission.

Additional transcripts from the Apollo 17 mission described astronauts witnessing unexplained flashing lights in space, with one astronaut comparing the scene to “the Fourth of July out there.”

NASA analysts at the time reportedly suggested some observations may have been caused by reflections from floating ice particles or spacecraft debris, though several incidents remained unresolved in official reports.

Reports Describe Hovering Metallic Objects

The newly released files also include numerous civilian and military witness accounts from recent years.

Several reports from 2023 described metallic objects hovering silently in the sky before apparently materializing out of bright flashes of light.

Military personnel and federal officials documented incidents involving unusual aerial behavior that investigators said did not match known conventional aircraft performance.

Some reports detailed craft capable of sudden acceleration, abrupt 90-degree turns at high speed, and rapid disappearance from radar systems.

Defense analysts noted that such movements would exceed the known operational limits of most publicly acknowledged aviation technologies.

Infrared Footage Captures Unresolved Encounters

Recent infrared footage included in the disclosure package documented encounters involving unidentified objects over regions including Iraq, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates between 2022 and 2024.

One video recorded in the Middle East reportedly showed an oval-shaped object moving at such speed that military analysts initially flagged it as a possible missile threat.

Other reports described glowing orange orbs observed by federal agents that appeared to release smaller red luminous objects while airborne.

Several cases remain officially classified as “unresolved” in Pentagon summaries.

Pentagon Says No Proof of Extraterrestrial Life

Despite the unusual nature of many incidents, Pentagon officials emphasized that the files do not constitute proof of extraterrestrial life or alien technology.

The Department of Defense stated that many reports may ultimately be explained through foreign military technology, classified U.S. defense programs, atmospheric effects, optical distortions, weather balloons, or sensor malfunctions.

A previously released 2024 government review similarly concluded there was no verified evidence of alien spacecraft or a coordinated government cover-up involving extraterrestrial activity.

Officials stressed that unidentified phenomena should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of non-human intelligence.

New PURSUE Portal to Host Ongoing Releases

The Pentagon confirmed that the newly published material represents only the first phase of a broader disclosure effort.

Additional files, photographs, and video recordings are expected to be uploaded regularly through a new government platform known as the PURSUE portal.

Officials said future releases would occur every few weeks as agencies continue reviewing and declassifying historical records connected to unidentified anomalous phenomena investigations.

The disclosures are expected to intensify public debate over aviation safety, national security, and the possibility of advanced unexplained technologies operating within restricted airspace.
