A catastrophic explosion and fire at a historic lumber mill in rural Maine killed one firefighter and injured at least 11 others on Friday, triggering a large-scale emergency response and overwhelming nearby medical facilities.
The incident occurred at the Robbins Lumber facility in Searsmont, where firefighters had initially responded to reports of a blaze near a dust silo before a powerful explosion tore through the site.
Authorities said the explosion rapidly escalated the situation into a mass casualty emergency as flames spread across multiple buildings and destroyed several fire vehicles positioned near the scene.
Firefighters Caught in Massive Blast
Emergency crews were first dispatched around 10:05 a.m. local time after reports of smoke and fire emerging from an industrial dust silo at the mill complex.
According to officials, firefighters were actively battling the initial blaze when the silo suddenly exploded.
The force of the blast intensified the fire instantly, sending debris across the facility and igniting surrounding structures. Witnesses described a massive fireball followed by thick black smoke visible from miles away.
Several firefighters reportedly suffered burns after their protective gear caught fire during the explosion.
Authorities later confirmed that one firefighter died at the scene while at least 11 other individuals sustained injuries ranging from burns to trauma-related conditions.
Regional Hospitals Overwhelmed
The sudden influx of injured responders and workers placed heavy strain on medical resources across the region.
Officials said MaineHealth Maine Medical Center received 10 transferred patients from smaller local hospitals as emergency crews attempted to stabilize the injured.
Another critically injured patient was transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center for advanced treatment.
Despite the severity of the explosion, all 115 employees working at the mill at the time of the incident were safely evacuated and accounted for without reported injuries.
Historic Mill Suffers Devastating Damage
Robbins Lumber, a family-owned operation that has operated since 1881, suffered extensive destruction from the explosion and resulting fires.
Company spokesperson Christian Halsted described the damage as “hugely devastating” and confirmed the facility would remain closed indefinitely while investigations and cleanup operations continue.
Fire crews remained on scene for hours battling lingering hotspots and smaller secondary explosions caused by industrial materials and equipment inside the complex.
Authorities warned residents to avoid the area due to ongoing hazards and emergency operations.
Multiple Agencies Launch Investigation
The cause of the initial fire and explosion remains under investigation.
Officials from the Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have launched a joint inquiry into the disaster.
Environmental protection agencies are also participating in the investigation because of concerns surrounding smoke, industrial chemicals, and debris released during the blast.
Fire Marshal Shawn Esler said investigators face significant challenges because much of the facility was heavily damaged or destroyed.
Authorities stated it could take considerable time before the exact sequence of events leading to the explosion is fully determined.
Governor Visits Scene
Janet Mills visited the scene following the disaster and urged residents to stay away from the area while emergency operations continue.
State officials praised firefighters and rescue personnel who responded under dangerous conditions during one of Maine’s most serious industrial emergencies in recent years.
The death of the firefighter has deeply affected emergency response communities across the state, with tributes beginning to emerge from departments throughout New England.
Officials have not yet publicly released the identity of the firefighter who was killed.
