Greenland and Denmark Say “No Thanks” to U.S. Proposal

Denmark and its autonomous territory Greenland publicly rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposal to send a U.S. hospital vessel — described by Trump as a “great hospital boat” — to provide medical care on the Arctic island.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated in a social media post that the offer had been “noted” but firmly declined, saying Greenland already operates a publicly funded healthcare system that provides free medical care to its citizens. He said the invitation for assistance was unnecessary.

Denmark’s Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen echoed that sentiment, telling reporters there was “no need for special health care efforts” on the island and that Greenlanders receive medical treatment either locally or in Denmark when needed. Danish officials also said they had not been consulted before Trump’s announcement.

Trump’s Announcement Sparks Diplomatic Friction

Trump announced the plan on social media without prior diplomatic consultation, posting that the hospital ship was “on the way” and would care for “many people who are sick and not being taken care of” in Greenland. He referenced working with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who was designated by Trump as a special envoy to Greenland in December 2025.

Officials from both Denmark and Greenland emphasised that formal diplomatic engagement is the proper channel for discussions about cooperation. Prime Minister Nielsen underscored that dialogue and cooperation require respect for Greenland’s sovereignty and decision-making authority.

The rejection comes amid an ongoing diplomatic strain known as the Greenland crisis, centred on Trump’s previous threats to assert U.S. control over the territory and Denmark’s repeated insistence that “Greenland is not for sale.” The hospital ship episode has added another layer to the already tense relationship.

Questions Over Practicality and Intent

It remains unclear which vessel Trump intended to deploy, if any, with both U.S. Navy hospital ships — USNS Mercy and USNS Comfort — reported to be in dry dock and undergoing maintenance, not in a position for immediate deployment according to external tracking data and reporting. Trump’s social post also included an AI-generated image of a hospital ship, and U.S. officials provided no confirmation of an actual deployment plan.

Critics of the proposal noted that Greenland’s medical needs are met by its existing infrastructure and, when necessary, through coordination with Danish hospitals. The episode also drew attention to broader disagreements over U.S. intentions in the Arctic and diplomatic norms.

Context of U.S.–Denmark Relations

Tensions between Washington and Copenhagen have persisted since the Trump administration’s expressed interest in Greenland, including past suggestions about purchasing or annexing the territory — ideas that Danish leaders consistently rejected. Denmark and Greenland officials reaffirmed that any cooperation with the United States should proceed through official diplomatic channels and with mutual respect.
