With only two games as Oklahoma quarterback under his belt, John Mateer has already shown what made him one of the most coveted players in the transfer portal over the last offseason.
Those two games, combined with Mateer’s 2024 season at Washington State, have Oklahoma football analyst and former Sooners defensive lineman Dusty Dvoracek ready to make a proclamation.
“John Mateer is the best quarterback in the country,” he told KREF in Norman. “There aren’t many that I can think of that I would rather have as my quarterback.”
Few would argue. Mateer enters Week 3 as the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy, according to the latest odds at DraftKings. Those odds place Mateer at +800, 50 points better than No. 2, LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
Mateer ranks sixth in FBS in passing yards per game, averaging 331 in OU’s two games so far. His 98 yards rushing rank him fifth among Southeastern Conference quarterbacks, and his three rushing touchdowns rank him in a tie for second in the SEC among all players.
“His ability as a runner, man. He knew he could pick up yards, and I saw it at Washington State,” Dvoracek said. “But he’s got vision and the ability to make people miss like a running back.”
Oklahoma, newly minted as the No. 16 team in FBS in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll, travels to Temple on Saturday in Week 3.
