CHON BURI — Thai authorities have raided an allegedly Chinese-operated electronic waste recycling facility in Chon Buri province, uncovering large quantities of hazardous waste and equipment suspected of being used in illegal e-waste processing activities.

The operation was carried out by officials from the Ministry of Industry, the Department of Industrial Works, and environmental enforcement agencies following reports of unauthorized recycling activities at the site. Investigators believe the factory was processing imported electronic waste without the necessary permits and in violation of environmental regulations. (bangkokpost.com)

Large Stockpile of Electronic Waste Discovered

During the raid, authorities found substantial quantities of discarded electronic components, including circuit boards, computer parts, electrical wiring, and other electronic materials awaiting processing.

Officials said preliminary inspections indicated that waste materials had been imported and dismantled to extract valuable metals such as copper and aluminum. Investigators are examining whether hazardous substances were handled improperly, potentially posing risks to workers and nearby communities.

The facility’s operators were reportedly unable to produce documentation authorizing several aspects of the operation, prompting officials to launch a wider investigation.

Environmental Concerns Raised

Electronic waste is considered one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams and can contain dangerous substances including lead, mercury, cadmium, and other toxic materials.

Environmental officials warned that improper recycling methods can contaminate soil, water supplies, and air quality. Authorities are now collecting samples from the site to determine whether environmental damage occurred as a result of the operation.

Thailand has tightened restrictions on imported electronic waste in recent years amid concerns that the country could become a destination for foreign waste shipments after other Asian nations strengthened their own import controls.

Investigation Into Foreign Ownership

Officials are also examining the ownership structure of the factory and whether foreign investors were operating the business through nominee arrangements that may violate Thai law.

The Ministry of Industry said records related to company registration, imports, and waste disposal activities are being reviewed. Authorities have not yet announced whether criminal charges will be filed.

Several workers were questioned during the operation, and investigators are seeking additional information regarding the origin of the electronic waste and its intended destination after processing.

Crackdown on Illegal Waste Operations

The raid forms part of a broader government campaign targeting illegal industrial activities, environmental violations, and unauthorized waste-processing facilities across Thailand.

Industry Minister Akanat Promphan has repeatedly pledged stronger enforcement against factories found violating environmental and industrial regulations, particularly those involving hazardous waste.

Officials said the Chon Buri investigation remains ongoing and that further inspections may be conducted at related facilities in other provinces.
