Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow’s injury comeback found an exclamation point of sorts with the Thanksgiving beatdown of Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens.
Burrow’s comeback story, though, is far from complete.
After all, Burrow’s Bengals are just getting started in the NFL playoff conversation. The odds are slim, but not being eliminated before December is something they’re sure thankful for in the building at Paycor Stadium.
Burrow? Chalk him up as surprised right alongside viewers when it comes to some of the mobility he put on display during the game.
“I was a little more mobile than I expected to be,” Burrow said after the game. “We’ve got a good system on the sideline changing shoes and doing what I need to do to stay fresh.”

The Bengals offense seemed more abbreviated than usual in the first half and struggled in the red zone throughout the night. But Burrow told Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com that, indeed, everyone saw him shaking off the rust in real time:
“I thought the second half, I started to put it more where I wanted. I settled in a little bit. I certainly missed some throws that I typically make. But after that, I felt pretty comfortable back there. I thought the O-line did great, we ran it well. Obviously, the defense played great. I’ve just got to keep getting better.”
Burrow will keep wearing a protective device in his cleat and going through the sideline-shoe routine shown on the broadcast to keep him warm and fresh.
But context matters. Burrow is back ahead of schedule, looked pretty mobile and threw for 261 yards and two scores in Baltimore, of all places, to keep the season alive.
It’s a commendable feat for Burrow and one that clearly resonated with his locker room. If he gets more comfortable by the week while getting names like Tee Higgins back, most of December should be pretty interesting for the Bengals.
Joe Burrow told me pregame he has a steel plate in his left cleat but it’s a little tight causing some numbness so he plans to switch into sneakers on the sideline between drives. pic.twitter.com/RxqdnwBAeF
