A routine traffic stop in Florida has attracted national attention after body camera footage showed a driver successfully challenging a distracted-driving accusation by pointing out that she does not have the body part the deputy claimed was holding a cellphone.

The incident involved Kathleen “Katie” Thomas and occurred in Lake Worth, Florida, during a distracted-driving enforcement operation conducted by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Video of the encounter has since spread widely across social media platforms, generating millions of views and sparking debate about police procedures and traffic enforcement practices.

Traffic Stop Takes Unexpected Turn

According to body camera footage, a sheriff’s deputy stopped Thomas after alleging that she was using a cellphone while driving.

The deputy reportedly told Thomas, “You drove past me holding the phone with your right hand, manipulating that phone.”

Thomas immediately challenged the accusation by raising her right arm, which ends below the elbow and does not have a hand.

Laughing at the claim, she responded, “Obviously not … you just said my right hand.”

The exchange quickly became the focal point of the viral video, with viewers noting the apparent contradiction between the citation allegation and Thomas’s physical condition.

Deputy Revises Explanation

After realizing the discrepancy, the deputy reportedly changed his description of what he believed he had observed.

According to the footage, he told Thomas that he thought he had seen her right hand raised and suggested he may have mistaken another movement inside the vehicle.

The deputy then asked Thomas to swear that she had not been holding a cellphone while driving.

Despite the confusion over the original allegation, the deputy proceeded to issue a citation for operating a handheld wireless communication device. The ticket carried a fine of approximately $116.

Video Sparks Public Reaction

After the body camera footage was released online, the incident quickly gained traction on TikTok, Instagram, and other social media platforms.

Many viewers questioned how a citation could be issued after the deputy’s original description of the alleged violation was shown to be physically impossible. Others argued that the case highlighted the importance of body cameras and video evidence in documenting police interactions.

The viral attention placed significant public scrutiny on the traffic stop and prompted renewed discussion about accuracy in traffic enforcement and the burden of proof required for citations.

Citation Ultimately Dismissed

Following the widespread attention generated by the video, the citation was later dismissed.

Officials stated that the deputy requested the ticket be dropped due to insufficient evidence supporting the allegation. As a result, Thomas was no longer required to contest the citation in court or pay the associated fine.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has not announced any disciplinary action related to the incident. However, the encounter has continued to draw attention online as an example of how body camera footage can influence public understanding of law enforcement interactions.

For Thomas, what began as a routine traffic stop ultimately became a widely viewed social media moment that raised broader questions about enforcement accuracy, officer observations, and accountability in traffic stops.
