The North Carolina Tar Heels are still reeling from their Week 1 loss to TCU on Monday night. But they need to quickly forget about it and move on as it’s a short week.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to Charlotte to face off against the 49ers in what has quickly become a HUGE game for UNC. Falling to 0-2 before playing USF and Clemson still over the next few weeks wouldn’t be very good.
While the Tar Heels are double-digit favorites at Charlotte, this game will be no pushover.
It’s a road game against a team that will be fired up after a loss in Week 1 as well. The 49ers will be looking to pull off the upset and keep UNC reeling. They will try to do so with some familiar faces as well.
Charlotte’s starting quarterback is Conner Harrell, a player who spent three years at North Carolina, including a 2024 season in which he saw action despite losing the starting job to Max Johnson. Harrell transferred out and is now with Charlott,e hoping to lead the upset.
On the defensive side of the ball, former Tar Heels defensive back Ja’Qurious Conley is a standout for the 49ers who could impact the game. In all there are seven former Tar Heels set to face off against UNC this weekend. In a battle of head coaches looking for their first wins, who will prevail?
Key to Victory
Defense. Defense. Defense. The Tar Heels were gashed by TCU, giving up 48 points and 542 total yards on offense in the game. UNC’s effort looked pathetic for the most part with poor tackling, poor coverage and limited pressure on the quarterback.
This week’s opponent isn’t as tough but as I mentioned before, they are no pushover. The Tar Heels can’t let Harrell get into a rhythm and they need to play better overall. They can’t be bad in coverage or tackling because if they do, it could be a long night.
Something to watch
Who will be the quarterback? The Tar Heels went with Gio Lopez as the starter against TCU before he was hurt, and Max Johnson replaced him. But at that point, the game was already out of hand.
Johnson did turn in a solid performance and at least gave Belichick and his staff something to think about in terms of a quarterback decision. However, that will depend on Lopez’s health going into this week. There is a scenario that they go with one quarterback to start the gam,e but pull him if he’s playing poorly.
What the Tar Heels do at quarterback could be telling for not only this game but the rest of the season.
