It was just two seasons ago (!) that the Dallas Mavericks were in the NBA Finals, with a young superstar on the roster in Luka Doncic, a veteran star in Kyrie Irving and a great supporting cast. GM Nico Harrison was the toast of the town?
Now? Irving is out. A bunch of other players are gone. The Mavericks are 3-8 in 2025-26… and of course, Doncic is wearing purple and gold thanks to one of the worst trades in sports history.
Harrison, as reports said on Tuesday, is being fired. Maybe it’s because of the Doncic trade, but really, it seems to be more about the boos and chants from fans who continue to be furious (and rightfully so!).
But there are other moves he made that were bad. Let’s run through them:
He allowed Jalen Brunson to leave with nothing in return
In hindsight, it would have been a great idea to re-sign Brunson, who left for the New York Knicks and became a superstar right away.
The Kristaps Porzingis trade was bad
Porzingis to the Washington Wizards brought back Davis Bertans and Spencer Dinwiddie. Not great!
The Quentin Grimes trade was worse
Caleb Martin came back to the Mavs and hasn’t done much. Grimes, meanwhile, exploded in Philadelphia. Oops.
The firing of trainer Casey Smith led to backlash
If you start to feel pity for Nico Harrison, remember that he first drove Dirk Nowitzki away from the organization by firing Casey Smith, the best trainer in all of basketball, over the phone, while he was taking care of his dying Mother.

This did NOT go over well.
Letting Derrick Jones Jr. go wasn’t great
Jones continues to prove he’s one of the NBA’s best glue guys with the Los Angeles Clippers.
