Eleven people allegedly linked to a Bangladesh-based extremist network have been arrested in a series of coordinated operations across Assam, the state’s Special Task Force (STF) chief said on Tuesday, describing the crackdown as a major blow to cross-border radical networks operating in the region.

The arrests followed weeks of intelligence-led surveillance and multiple raids carried out by the Assam STF in collaboration with local police units. Officials said the suspects were involved in recruitment, logistics, and ideological propagation on behalf of an extremist organization with roots in neighboring Bangladesh.

What Authorities Revealed

Addressing the media, the STF chief said the arrested individuals had “clear operational and ideological links” to a Bangladesh-based extremist group and were working to expand its footprint in Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the network was actively radicalizing youth and facilitating cross-border coordination,” the STF chief said, adding that digital devices, documents, and other incriminating materials were seized during the raids.

Officials did not rule out further arrests, noting that the probe is ongoing and may extend to other states.

Focus on Cross-Border Extremism

Security agencies have long expressed concern over extremist groups attempting to exploit porous stretches of the India–Bangladesh border to move operatives, funds, and propaganda. Assam, which shares a sensitive frontier with Bangladesh, has been a particular focus of counterterrorism monitoring.

The STF chief said the latest operation underscores the importance of inter-agency coordination and intelligence sharing. “We are closely working with central agencies to dismantle the entire network,” he said.

Legal Action Underway

The accused have been booked under stringent provisions of India’s anti-terror and criminal laws. Police said they would seek custodial remand to further question the suspects and trace financial and communication links, including possible handlers across the border.

Senior officials emphasized that due process would be followed and that the case would be pursued vigorously in court.

Political and Public Reaction

The arrests triggered sharp political reactions in Assam, with ruling party leaders praising the STF for acting decisively against threats to internal security. Opposition parties, while welcoming action against extremism, urged authorities to ensure that innocent people are not harassed and that investigations remain evidence-based.

Security analysts said the operation highlights persistent challenges in countering radicalization in border states. “The emphasis now will be on disrupting funding channels and online propaganda,” said a New Delhi–based counterterrorism expert.

What Comes Next

Investigators are analyzing seized electronic devices and financial records to map the full extent of the network. Officials said the findings would be shared with national agencies to prevent similar cells from emerging elsewhere.

“The message is clear,” the STF chief said. “Any attempt to threaten Assam’s peace and security will be dealt with firmly.”
