A Frontier Airlines passenger jet fatally struck a runway trespasser during takeoff at Denver International Airport late Friday night, triggering an emergency evacuation and a large-scale federal investigation into airport security procedures.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:19 p.m. on May 8, 2026, involving Frontier Airlines Flight 4345, an Airbus A321 scheduled to travel from Denver to Los Angeles.
According to aviation authorities, the aircraft was accelerating for takeoff on Runway 17L when it struck an individual who had allegedly breached airport security by climbing over a perimeter fence and entering the active runway area.
Pilot Aborted Takeoff After Impact
Air traffic control recordings captured the pilot urgently informing controllers moments after the collision.
“We just hit somebody,” the pilot reported, later adding concerns about a possible engine fire.
Officials said the aircraft had reached approximately 146 mph during its takeoff roll when the impact occurred.
The crew immediately aborted the takeoff and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway.
Passengers onboard later described scenes of confusion and panic as smoke reportedly became visible inside portions of the cabin.
Emergency crews responded rapidly to the aircraft after reports of engine-related issues following the collision.
Emergency Evacuation Conducted on Runway
Authorities confirmed that all 224 passengers and seven crew members were evacuated using emergency slides directly onto the runway.
Several passengers sustained injuries during the evacuation process, which unfolded under emergency conditions late at night on the active airfield.
Officials initially reported between 12 and 17 minor injuries, with five passengers transported to local hospitals for treatment. Most injuries were described as minor and related to the emergency slide evacuation.
Airport operations on Runway 17L were temporarily suspended while emergency personnel secured the area and investigators began examining the scene.
Trespasser Pronounced Dead at Scene
The individual struck by the aircraft was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not publicly released the person’s identity pending notification of family members and further investigation.
Officials stated the individual had entered the restricted runway area only minutes before the collision.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said preliminary findings indicated the trespasser “deliberately scaled” a perimeter security fence before running onto the runway.
Some early reports indicated the victim suffered catastrophic injuries involving one of the aircraft’s engines. Authorities have not publicly released detailed forensic findings.
Federal Agencies Launch Investigation
The incident is now under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, the Federal Aviation Administration, and the Transportation Security Administration.
Investigators are expected to focus heavily on how the individual gained access to a secured airfield area at one of the busiest airports in the United States.
Authorities are also reviewing airport surveillance systems, perimeter fencing, security patrol procedures, and communications between airport operations personnel and air traffic control.
Denver International Airport later confirmed that Runway 17L was reopened after investigators completed their initial work at the scene.
Aviation Safety and Security Concerns Renewed
The fatal incident has renewed scrutiny of airport perimeter security and runway intrusion prevention systems at major U.S. airports.
While runway incursions involving vehicles or unauthorized personnel are relatively rare, aviation experts note that such breaches can become extremely dangerous during aircraft takeoff or landing operations when pilots have limited reaction time.
Federal investigators are expected to release additional findings in the coming weeks as the inquiry continues.
