Ukraine Says Washington Sought Its Expertise on Iranian Drone Threat

President Volodymyr Zelensky said the United States has asked Ukraine for assistance in countering Iranian-made drones, citing Kyiv’s extensive battlefield experience dealing with the weapons during the ongoing war with Russia.

According to Zelensky, U.S. officials requested technical insights and operational knowledge about how Ukrainian forces have successfully detected, tracked, and destroyed Iranian-designed drones used in combat.

The request comes amid the escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, where Iranian drone systems have reportedly been deployed in attacks across the Middle East.

Ukraine’s Experience With Iranian Drones

Ukraine has spent more than two years defending its territory against waves of Iranian-designed Shahed drones used by Russian forces in strikes against infrastructure and military targets.

Ukrainian military units developed a range of strategies to intercept the drones, including the use of mobile air-defense systems, electronic warfare equipment, and coordinated radar detection networks.

These drones, often referred to as “loitering munitions,” can travel long distances before striking targets, making them a significant threat to both military and civilian infrastructure.

Zelensky said Ukraine’s experience in neutralizing the drones has provided valuable lessons that could help allied forces counter similar threats.

Growing Security Cooperation Between Washington and Kyiv

The request highlights the expanding military cooperation between Washington and Kyiv.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the United States has provided extensive military support to Ukrainian forces, including advanced weapons systems, intelligence sharing, and training programs.

Officials say Ukraine’s battlefield experience has also offered valuable insights into modern warfare, particularly in areas such as drone defense, electronic warfare, and missile interception.

Security analysts note that the proliferation of drone technology has become a major concern for military planners worldwide.

Implications for the Iran Conflict

The involvement of Iranian drone systems in attacks across the Middle East has raised concerns among U.S. and allied officials about the growing use of unmanned weapons in regional conflicts.

Defense analysts say the technology allows relatively inexpensive drones to threaten high-value military installations, oil infrastructure, and civilian targets.

Zelensky’s remarks suggest that Ukraine may play a role in advising allies on defensive strategies developed during the war against Russia.

However, officials have not announced any formal agreement outlining Ukraine’s involvement in U.S. or allied military operations related to the Iran conflict.
