The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested a gangster accused of being hired to eliminate a key witness in the September 26 violence in Bareilly, officials said on Sunday. The accused was nabbed during a targeted operation in Pilibhit, dealing a significant blow to efforts aimed at intimidating witnesses in the high-profile case.
According to senior police officials, the arrested man is a known criminal with a history of violent offences and was allegedly contracted to kill a crucial eyewitness whose testimony is considered vital to the prosecution in the Bareilly clash case.
Arrest After Intelligence-Led Operation
Police said the arrest followed sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering after inputs suggested that a contract killing was being planned to derail the investigation into the September 26 incident. Acting on specific leads, a special police team tracked the suspect’s movements and apprehended him from Pilibhit without incident.
“The accused had been tasked with silencing a key witness,” a senior officer said. “His arrest has prevented a serious crime and strengthened the security of the judicial process.”
Weapons and other incriminating materials were recovered from the accused, police added. These are being examined to establish links with other individuals involved in the conspiracy.
September 26 Bareilly Clash
The Bareilly clash on September 26 had resulted in widespread violence, injuries, and significant damage to property, prompting a large-scale police investigation. Multiple cases were registered, and several accused have since been arrested.
Investigators say the witness targeted in the alleged murder plot had provided critical information about the sequence of events and the identities of those involved in the violence, making him a key figure in the case.
Probe Into Wider Conspiracy
Police are now probing who hired the gangster and whether the conspiracy involved individuals already named in the Bareilly clash case. Officials said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
“We are examining financial transactions, call records, and criminal links to identify the mastermind behind the plot,” an officer said.
Authorities have also reviewed security arrangements for witnesses in sensitive cases, reiterating their commitment to ensuring their safety.
Law-and-Order Message
Senior police officials described the arrest as a strong message against attempts to interfere with the justice system through intimidation or violence. “Anyone trying to influence investigations or court proceedings will face strict action,” the official said.
The accused has been produced before a local court and remanded to judicial custody. Further details are expected as the probe continues.
