Mirai Sato scored the go-ahead goal on a header at 88 :11 off a corner kick by Palli Ingvason as the Hawaii Hilo men’s soccer team beat Western Oregon 3-2 in the first round of the NCAA Division II Tournament on Friday in Turlock, Calif.
Sato opened the scoring with a goal at 9 :08 off an assist from Iago Perez Ferreiro in the Super 4 Regional matchup. Kanilau Tolentino-Perry scored at 67 :02 to put the Vulcans ahead 2-1.
Adam Frank made one save for Hawaii Hilo, the PacWest runner-up.
The Vulcans (12-5-2 ) will play host Stanislaus State in a second-round game Sunday at 1 p.m.
Alex Grignon (55 :14 ) and Yahir Ocampo Navarro (83 :57, PK ) scored for the Wolves (10-5-4 ).
Austin Valdez had six saves for Western Oregon, the GNAC champion.
UH’s Tyminska claims 200 breaststroke Hawaii swimmer Zofia Tyminska won the 200-yard breaststroke on Friday for her second event victory at the SMU Invitational in Dallas.
Tyminska’s time of 2 :11.56 was the third fastest in UH history.
On Thursday, she won the 100 breaststroke in 1 :00.41.
UH’s Macie Wheeler finished runner-up in the women’s 1-meter diving event (280.65 points ) on Friday, while Karol Ostrowski (men’s 50 freestyle ; 19.39 ) and the women’s 400 medley relay team (3 :39.39 ) finished third.
HPU men rally past Western Washington Quentin Meza scored 23 points, and Joshua West added 19 points and five steals as the Hawaii Pacific men’s basketball team rallied past Western Washington 86-71 on Friday at St. Francis’ Shark Tank.
Quinton McCullough finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Avi Halpert scored 10 for the Sharks (3-1 ), who trailed 40-27 late in the first half.
Aidan Rice scored 32 points for the Vikings (3-4 ).
UC Merced women’s hoops topples HPU Nicole Lukito finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, and Paloma Ramirez had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the UC Merced women’s basketball team defeated Hawaii Pacific 67-57 on Friday at St. Francis’ Shark Tank.
Jalen Samuel scored 12 points and Alana Roberts added 11 for the Sharks (0-3 ), who led 22-7 early in the second quarter.
Quinn Godfrey had 10 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for the Bobcats (2-1 ).
