At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others remain missing after powerful landslides swept through parts of New Zealand, as emergency services race against time amid dangerous conditions caused by extreme weather.

Authorities said the landslides were triggered by days of intense rainfall that saturated hillsides and caused widespread ground instability, particularly in rural and coastal regions. Entire sections of land collapsed without warning, destroying homes, blocking roads, and cutting off communities.

Search and Rescue Underway

Emergency responders, including police, fire crews, and urban search-and-rescue teams, have been deployed to the worst-hit areas. Helicopters have been used where possible to assess damage and reach isolated residents, though ongoing rain and unstable terrain have complicated rescue efforts.

“We are dealing with very challenging conditions,” a police spokesperson said. “Our priority is locating those who are unaccounted for, but safety concerns are limiting how quickly teams can move.”

Officials confirmed that at least two bodies have been recovered, while multiple people are still missing. The exact number of those unaccounted for has not been publicly confirmed, with authorities cautioning that figures may change as searches continue.

Communities Cut Off

Several communities have been left isolated after landslides buried roads and damaged critical infrastructure. Power outages and disruptions to mobile networks have been reported, further hampering communication with residents in affected areas.

Local officials said some homes were either destroyed or deemed unsafe due to the risk of further collapses. Residents in high-risk zones have been urged to evacuate where possible.

“This is a rapidly evolving situation,” emergency management officials said. “People should stay away from slip zones and follow evacuation orders immediately.”

Weather System Behind the Disaster

Meteorological authorities said the landslides were caused by an intense weather system that brought torrential rain well above seasonal averages. In some regions, rainfall totals over a short period exceeded what is typically expected in an entire month.

Geologists warned that the ground remains highly unstable and that further slips are possible even if rainfall eases, particularly on steep or previously affected slopes.

Government Response

The New Zealand Government said it is monitoring the situation closely and has pledged support to affected communities. Emergency funding and disaster relief resources are expected to be mobilized once damage assessments are completed.

Prime Ministerial officials expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and praised first responders working under hazardous conditions.

“This is a heartbreaking situation,” a government statement said. “Our thoughts are with the families affected, and every possible resource is being directed to the response.”

A Growing Climate Concern

The disaster has renewed discussion about the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in New Zealand. Scientists have repeatedly warned that climate change is intensifying rainfall patterns, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides, particularly in vulnerable regions.

Emergency officials stressed that public vigilance is critical during severe weather.

“If you are asked to leave, leave early,” one official said. “These events can escalate very quickly.”

As search operations continue, authorities say further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
