Pentagon Signals Major Escalation in Iran War
The United States has warned that the ongoing military campaign against Iran is entering its most intense phase, with senior defense officials announcing a surge in airstrikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure.
Speaking at a Pentagon briefing in Washington, D.C., on March 10, 2026, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the day would mark “the most intense day of strikes inside Iran so far.”
Hegseth said the operation would involve the largest number of aircraft, bombers, and coordinated strikes since the conflict began, indicating a major escalation in the war between the United States and Iran.
“Today will be yet again our most intense day of strikes inside Iran — the most fighters, the most bombers, the most strikes,” Hegseth said during the briefing.
Thousands of Targets Already Hit
U.S. military officials said American forces have already carried out more than 5,000 strikes on Iranian targets, including missile launchers, naval vessels, and drone facilities.
General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters that the strikes are aimed at crippling Iran’s missile and drone capabilities, which have been used in attacks against U.S. forces and regional allies.
Pentagon officials also said the sustained bombardment has significantly reduced Iranian missile launches in recent days, though Tehran continues to conduct retaliatory attacks.
War Enters Its Second Week
The escalation comes as the conflict enters its second week, following large-scale U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iranian military targets that began on February 28, 2026.
Since then, Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks targeting U.S. bases and allied countries in the Gulf region, as well as strikes against Israel and energy infrastructure.
The conflict has expanded across several areas of the Middle East, including naval operations in the Persian Gulf and airstrikes deep inside Iranian territory.
Strategic Objective of U.S. Campaign
According to Pentagon officials, the primary goals of the U.S. campaign include:
- Destroying Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities
- Weakening Iran’s naval forces operating in the Persian Gulf
- Preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons
Defense Secretary Hegseth said the military campaign is designed to force Iran to abandon its military threats against U.S. forces and allies.
The operation has been conducted under the authority of President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly warned Tehran that the United States will escalate military pressure if attacks on American personnel continue.
Iran Vows to Continue Resistance
Iranian officials have rejected U.S. claims that the country’s military capabilities are being dismantled and have vowed to continue retaliation.
Iran’s leadership has accused the United States and Israel of launching an unlawful war and has warned that further strikes could lead to broader regional escalation.
Tehran has also threatened to disrupt global energy shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital maritime route for international oil supplies.
Rising Global Concerns
The escalating air campaign has raised concerns among international observers about the possibility of a prolonged regional conflict.
Energy markets, shipping companies, and governments around the world are closely monitoring the situation because disruptions in the Persian Gulf could significantly affect global oil supplies.
For now, U.S. officials say military operations will continue as planned, warning that the coming days could see even heavier fighting as the campaign intensifies.
