Austin, Texas, March 1, 2026 (1:58 a.m. CST) — Three people were killed in a late-night shooting at a crowded bar in downtown Austin, authorities confirmed Sunday, marking one of the deadliest incidents in the city’s entertainment district in recent years. Law enforcement officials said the gunfire erupted shortly before 2:00 a.m. along West Sixth Street, a corridor known for its dense concentration of bars and weekend foot traffic.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers were already assigned to the area as part of routine nightlife patrols when shots were reported. Police said the suspect fired multiple rounds into a group of people gathered outside a bar before officers engaged the individual. The suspected gunman was shot by responding officers and pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities confirmed that two additional victims — both civilians — were killed during the incident. At least 14 others were injured, several critically, and were transported to area hospitals by Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services.
Rapid Response in a Crowded District
Officials said the first emergency call was received at approximately 1:58 a.m., with officers arriving within moments due to their proximity. Emergency medical crews treated multiple victims at the scene before transporting them for further care. Hospitals in the region were placed on temporary alert to prepare for incoming trauma patients.
Witnesses described panic as patrons fled into nearby establishments or sought shelter behind parked vehicles. Authorities have not publicly released the identities of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
Police have not disclosed the suspect’s name as of Sunday afternoon. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and interviewing witnesses to determine the sequence of events leading up to the shooting.
Federal Authorities Join Investigation

The Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed it has joined the investigation through its Joint Terrorism Task Force. In a statement, the FBI said it is examining whether the attack could constitute an act of terrorism, though officials emphasized that no definitive motive has yet been established.
Investigators said items recovered at the scene and from the suspect’s vehicle are being analyzed as part of a broader review of potential ideological or extremist links. Authorities cautioned against speculation, stating that motive determinations require comprehensive forensic and digital evidence analysis.
Governor Greg Abbott issued a statement offering condolences to the victims’ families and pledging full state support for the investigation. Additional state troopers were deployed to downtown Austin as a precautionary measure.
Community Impact and Public Safety Concerns
City officials said counseling services and victim assistance resources have been made available to those affected. Local business owners expressed concern about safety in the entertainment district, particularly as spring tourism and university events increase foot traffic in the coming weeks.
Mayor Kirk Watson described the shooting as “a tragic and senseless act of violence” and urged residents to rely on verified information from law enforcement sources. He emphasized that the investigation remains active and evolving.
Austin police stated there is no ongoing threat to the public but maintained heightened patrols throughout the downtown corridor as a precaution.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet clarified whether the suspect acted alone. Digital devices recovered during the investigation are undergoing forensic review, and officials indicated that additional updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
As the city grapples with the aftermath, questions remain about motive, possible affiliations, and what security measures may be reconsidered for one of Texas’s most prominent nightlife districts.
The investigation remains active.
