BENGALURU, Karnataka — Police have charged a former software engineer with premeditated murder after he allegedly killed his estranged wife in west Bengaluru in what investigators described as a months-long plot to carry out the crime. The accused surrendered to authorities shortly after the deadly shooting, police said. Hindustan Times+1

Officials identified the suspect as Balamurugan (40), a former IT professional, and the victim as his wife, Bhuvaneshwari (39), an assistant manager with Union Bank of India. The shooting took place around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday near 1st Main Road in the Rajajinagar Industrial Area, police confirmed. Hindustan Times+1

Premeditation and Planning, Police Say

According to investigators from the Magadi Road Police Station, Balamurugan spent nearly four months planning the killing, including researching methods online and acquiring an illegal firearm for the attack. Officers said he also carried a knife as a backup weapon to ensure the murder could be carried out if his pistol failed. mint

Police allege the weapon was purchased illegally in Bihar for approximately ₹80,000, and that Balamurugan traveled there earlier in the year to obtain and learn how to use the firearm. Two magazines and the pistol have been seized as evidence. Hindustan Times+1

Witnesses and forensic teams confirmed that multiple shots were fired, with most striking Bhuvaneshwari in the head, hand, and back. Post-mortem reports later confirmed she died from multiple bullet wounds. Hindustan Times

Surrender and Police Custody

Shortly after the shooting, Balamurugan reportedly walked into the Magadi Road Police Station, surrendered the firearm and knife, and told officers that his wife “deserved it,” according to police sources. Investigators said he showed no visible remorse during questioning. mint

A magistrate has ordered that Balamurugan be remanded in police custody for 14 days as the inquiry continues, including tracing his movements and verifying how he obtained the weapon. mint

Marital Discord and Motive

Police investigations indicate a history of marital discord, with the couple married since 2011 and living apart for over a year due to ongoing disputes. Balamurugan had reportedly grown suspicious of Bhuvaneshwari’s loyalty, and tensions escalated after she allegedly issued him a divorce notice weeks earlier—a document police are still attempting to locate. Family members told local media that disputes over their children and allegations of abuse had previously surfaced, compounding long-standing animosity, though formal charges related to domestic violence have not been disclosed. mint

Community Shock and Ongoing Probe

The murder has stunned residents in the Rajajinagar neighbourhood, with neighbours describing the attack as shocking and unthinkable in a typically quiet area. Local police continue to work with forensic and cyber units to detail the planning and digital evidence connected to the case. Hindustan Times

Authorities have appealed to anyone with additional information to assist the investigation as they work to reconstruct the full timeline and motive behind the incident.
