A major counter-terrorism operation by the Delhi Police Special Cell has led to the dismantling of an alleged Pakistan-backed terror-crime syndicate operating across northern India. Authorities have arrested seven suspected operatives and recovered weapons, reconnaissance materials, and digital evidence believed to be linked to planned attacks on critical infrastructure and public locations.

The operation, announced in New Delhi on June 17, is being described by investigators as one of the most significant breakthroughs against cross-border terror networks this year. According to police officials, the syndicate allegedly maintained links with Pakistan-based handlers and was involved in coordinating terror-related activities, arms smuggling, and intelligence gathering. Cross-Border Network Allegedly Linked to Pakistan-Based Handlers

Investigators said the module was allegedly operated by Pakistan-based gangster-turned-terrorist Shahzad Bhatti and associate Ajmal Gujjar. Authorities claim the network functioned with support from across the border and recruited local operatives to carry out logistics, surveillance, and transportation activities. (The Times of India)

According to the Delhi Police Special Cell, the syndicate was engaged in smuggling illegal arms, ammunition, and narcotics from Pakistan through Punjab before distributing them across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Intelligence agencies believe the group was attempting to establish a broader operational network capable of supporting future terror activities. (Akashvani News)

    Weapons, Reconnaissance Material Recovered

During coordinated raids, investigators recovered weapons, ammunition, reconnaissance videos, and digital records allegedly documenting surveillance of potential targets. Officials stated that the material suggests extensive planning and monitoring activities had already been conducted. (The Times of India)

Security agencies are currently examining electronic devices seized during the operation to determine the full extent of the network’s activities and identify additional associates who may still be at large. Authorities have not publicly disclosed all potential targets due to ongoing investigations. (The Times of India)

    Additional Arrests and Wider Investigation

In a related development, Delhi Police announced the arrest of additional suspects linked to the broader network. Officials said several operatives were allegedly recruited through social media platforms and maintained contact with handlers located outside India. The investigation is being conducted in coordination with multiple security agencies, including the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which has carried out searches in Punjab and Haryana. Police believe the module operated across several states, highlighting the complexity of the network and the need for coordinated intelligence-sharing among security agencies. (The Times of India)

    Security Alert Remains in Place

Following the arrests, security has been heightened at key installations and sensitive locations across northern India. Authorities emphasized that investigations remain ongoing and that additional arrests cannot be ruled out.

Officials described the operation as a significant blow to cross-border terror and organized crime networks seeking to destabilize the region. They reiterated that security agencies remain vigilant against attempts to exploit criminal networks for terror-related activities. (www.ndtv.com)

The case is expected to remain under close scrutiny as investigators continue examining financial transactions, communications records, and international connections associated with the alleged syndicate. (The Times of India)

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is likely to travel to New Delhi next week for high-level talks with Indian leaders, according to officials familiar with the planning, in a visit aimed at reviewing bilateral ties amid shifting regional and global dynamics.

The proposed visit, which is still being finalised, comes at a time when India and Iran are recalibrating engagement on trade, connectivity, energy cooperation, and regional security, particularly developments in West Asia and Afghanistan. If confirmed, Araghchi’s trip would mark one of the most significant diplomatic exchanges between the two countries in recent months.

Agenda: Trade, Connectivity, and Regional Stability

Diplomatic sources said discussions are expected to focus on the future of the Chabahar Port, a flagship connectivity project that India views as critical for access to Afghanistan and Central Asia while bypassing Pakistan. The port has gained renewed strategic relevance amid evolving regional alignments and supply chain disruptions.

Energy cooperation is also likely to feature prominently. Although U.S. sanctions have constrained India’s oil imports from Iran in recent years, officials say both sides are exploring mechanisms to sustain broader economic engagement within existing international frameworks.

Regional security developments—particularly tensions in the Middle East and the humanitarian situation in Gaza—are also expected to be discussed. India has maintained channels with all major regional actors, while Iran has positioned itself as a key power broker in West Asian geopolitics.

    Diplomatic Significance

For New Delhi, the visit underscores a balancing act between strategic autonomy and partnerships with the West, especially the United States. India has consistently argued that its relationship with Iran is based on civilisational ties and long-term regional interests, not short-term geopolitical calculations.

Iran, for its part, has sought to deepen ties with Asian powers as it navigates sanctions pressure and strained relations with Western capitals. Engaging India—one of Asia’s largest economies and a major diplomatic player—fits squarely into Tehran’s outreach strategy.

“This visit is about maintaining momentum,” said a former Indian diplomat. “India and Iran don’t always see eye to eye, but there is recognition on both sides that sustained dialogue is essential.”

    Meetings in New Delhi

During his stay, Araghchi is expected to hold talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and senior officials at South Block. Discussions may also include multilateral issues, including developments in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and other regional forums where both countries engage.

While no major agreements are expected to be signed, officials said the emphasis will be on reviewing ongoing projects and setting priorities for the coming year.

    Looking Ahead

The timing of the visit is notable as India prepares for a packed diplomatic calendar in early 2026, while Iran continues to reposition itself amid regional volatility. Analysts say sustained engagement between New Delhi and Tehran remains important for regional connectivity and stability, even as external pressures complicate the relationship.

An official announcement from either side is expected in the coming days.
