TOLEDO, Ohio — A federal grand jury has charged a 33-year-old Ohio man with threatening to kill Vice President JD Vance, an indictment that reflects heightened enforcement of laws protecting senior U.S. officials from violent threats, authorities confirmed. The criminal case also includes an unrelated child sexual abuse materials charge that prosecutors said was uncovered during the investigation.
The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and United States Secret Service announced that Shannon Mathre was indicted on two counts in connection with statements and conduct alleged to have occurred while Vice President Vance was in Ohio last month.
Threat Allegations and Arrest
According to the DOJ, Mathre made statements indicating an intent to locate Vice President Vance and use an M14 automatic rifle to kill him. In the indictment unsealed on February 6, Mathre allegedly said: “I am going to find out where he (the vice president) is going to be and use my M14 automatic gun and kill him.”
The Secret Service arrested Mathre in Toledo on February 6 after the grand jury returned the indictment, which includes federal charges under Title 18 of the U.S. Code relating to threats against the Vice President, a successor to the presidency. He made his initial court appearance before a U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Ohio and pleaded not guilty. Mathre remains in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for February 11.
Additional Charges Discovered
While investigating the threat allegation against Mathre, federal agents also uncovered multiple digital files depicting child sexual abuse materials in his possession. The grand jury indicted him on a second count for receipt and distribution of these materials, a separate federal offense.
Prosecutors said the threat charge carries a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted, while the child sexual abuse materials charge carries a much stiffer potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Government and Legal Reactions
Attorney General Pamela Bondi and U.S. Attorney David M. Toepfer for the Northern District of Ohio issued statements reaffirming that violent threats against public officials will be prosecuted vigorously. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said federal law enforcement partners worked collaboratively to secure Mathre’s arrest and that such conduct will not be tolerated.
In court filings, Mathre’s defense attorney, Neil McElroy, argued that his client’s physical and mental health challenges make it unlikely that the defendant could have carried out the alleged threat, although he offered limited details on those conditions.
Broader Context of Political Violence Concerns
Threats against high-ranking officials have drawn heightened scrutiny amid a broader national conversation about political violence and the safety of public servants. The Secret Service and other federal agencies have stressed a zero-tolerance policy for credible violent threats.
This case follows other recent security incidents involving threats to Vice President Vance, including a separate arrest in early January of a man accused of vandalizing Vance’s Cincinnati home. These developments have underscored ongoing challenges in balancing public access to officials with the imperative of ensuring their safety.
Court Proceedings Ahead
Mathre’s next hearing on detention and related matters is scheduled for later this week in federal court. The justice system will determine whether he remains in custody as proceedings continue. Prosecutors are expected to pursue both counts aggressively, reflecting the seriousness with which threats against national leaders and related criminal conduct are treated under federal law.
