Minnesota Leaders Respond to Removal of DHS Secretary

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Jacob Frey, the mayor of Minneapolis, have welcomed the dismissal of Kristi Noem from her role as Secretary of the United States Department of Homeland Security, describing the move as a necessary step after months of escalating tensions between federal authorities and local officials.

President Donald Trump announced the removal of Noem earlier this week following mounting criticism over her leadership of the department, including controversy surrounding federal immigration enforcement operations and questions over department spending. The decision marks the first dismissal of a Senate-confirmed Cabinet official during President Donald Trump’s second presidential term.

In a public statement issued shortly after the announcement, Walz said the decision “should have come sooner,” arguing that federal immigration policies implemented under Noem had intensified tensions in Minnesota communities.

Background: Immigration Crackdown and Minneapolis Shootings

The conflict between Minnesota officials and the federal government escalated earlier in 2026 following the expansion of immigration enforcement operations in the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area.

Federal authorities deployed additional officers as part of broader immigration enforcement initiatives, leading to a series of protests and confrontations in Minneapolis. The situation intensified after fatal shootings involving federal immigration agents, including the killing of Minneapolis resident Renée Good during an enforcement incident on January 7, 2026.

Local officials sharply criticized the response from federal authorities. Governor Walz described the incident as the result of “governance designed to generate fear, headlines and conflict,” while Mayor Frey questioned federal accounts of the shooting and called for greater transparency in the investigation.

The incidents triggered large demonstrations across Minneapolis and prompted state officials to prepare the Minnesota National Guard to support local law enforcement if unrest escalated.

Walz and Frey Welcome Leadership Change

Following the announcement of Noem’s dismissal, both Walz and Frey indicated that they hoped the leadership change at the Department of Homeland Security could lead to a reset in relations between federal authorities and local governments.

Walz emphasized that state officials had repeatedly called for accountability after the shootings and the federal immigration surge in Minneapolis. He stated that Minnesota leaders were seeking cooperation rather than confrontation between federal immigration agencies and local law enforcement.

Mayor Frey also welcomed the decision, stating that the leadership change offered an opportunity for the federal government to reconsider enforcement strategies that had led to widespread protests and political conflict in the city.

However, both officials cautioned that replacing the department’s leadership alone would not resolve deeper disagreements over immigration enforcement policies and federal authority in local jurisdictions.

Trump Administration Announces Replacement

The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump intends to nominate Markwayne Mullin, a Republican senator from Oklahoma, to replace Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security. Mullin’s nomination is expected to be considered by the U.S. Senate in the coming weeks.

In announcing the change, President Donald Trump praised Noem’s work implementing the administration’s immigration policies but acknowledged growing political pressure surrounding the department’s operations and internal controversies.

Despite her dismissal from the cabinet post, the White House stated that Noem will continue to serve the administration in a diplomatic role connected to a Western Hemisphere security initiative known as “The Shield of the Americas.”

Continuing Political and Legal Tensions

While the firing of Noem was welcomed by several Democratic leaders, tensions between Minnesota officials and federal authorities remain unresolved.

The United States Department of Justice has previously examined actions by Minnesota state and city officials in connection with immigration protests and law enforcement cooperation, though details of the inquiry have not been fully disclosed publicly.

Political analysts say the dispute highlights a broader national debate over immigration enforcement, federal authority, and the role of local governments in responding to federal operations.

For Minneapolis residents, however, the immediate focus remains on restoring calm after months of political confrontation, protests, and ongoing investigations linked to the federal immigration surge.
