Beirut/Jerusalem — March 2, 2026: Israeli forces launched a series of air strikes across Lebanon on Monday in direct response to rocket and drone attacks by the Iran-aligned militant group Hezbollah, marking a significant expansion of the broader Middle East conflict that has grown out of recent U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran and its allies.

Hezbollah’s Attack and Israeli Response

Lebanon’s Hezbollah said it fired rockets and drones toward northern Israel — including near Haifa — in what the group described as retaliation for the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during recent strikes on Iran. Israel said it intercepted some of the projectiles, though others landed in open areas.

In retaliation, the Israeli military initiated sustained air strikes targeting Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of the militant organisation. Loud explosions and plumes of smoke were reported across key Lebanese population centres as Israeli jets struck infrastructure allegedly linked to Hezbollah’s military capabilities.

Casualties and Displacement

Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that at least 31 people have been killed and 149 injured so far as a result of the strikes, with casualties reported both in Beirut’s southern suburbs and in southern Lebanon. Hospitals in the region are receiving wounded civilians and fighters, and authorities have also noted significant damage to residential buildings and infrastructure.

Civilian displacement has rapidly increased as families flee south Lebanon and Beirut’s outskirts, with evacuation warnings issued by the Israeli army to residents of more than 50 towns and villages near the front lines. Many residents reportedly left on foot or by car under stressful, chaotic conditions.

Lebanese Government and Internal Dynamics

Lebanon’s government has condemned Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks and taken the unusual step of banning the militant group’s military actions, asserting that only the state has authority over decisions of war and peace. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam publicly criticised Hezbollah’s use of Lebanese territory for offensive operations, and secular leaders have called for the disarmament of the group.

Despite these statements, the Lebanese state’s ability to enforce restrictions on Hezbollah — a deeply entrenched political and military actor — remains unclear as conflict continues.

Broader Regional Escalation

The Lebanon strikes represent a dramatic widening of the conflict that began with U.S.-Israeli military operations against Iran’s strategic infrastructure earlier in the week. The U.S. military campaign has reportedly struck more than 1,250 Iranian targets and targeted naval assets in the Gulf, while Iran and allied groups have launched counter-attacks against regional U.S. and Israeli interests.

This expansion into Lebanese territory raises fears of a broader regional conflagration, particularly as Hezbollah is one of Tehran’s most powerful non-state allies and has significant military capacity along the Israel–Lebanon border.

International and Humanitarian Concerns

Global reactions to the escalation have been mixed. Some governments have called for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further civilian harm, while regional actors warn of unpredictable consequences as the conflict intensifies. Oil markets remain volatile amid concerns about stability in the Middle East.

Humanitarian agencies are monitoring unfolding displacement and casualty reports, with concerns that further escalation will strain medical facilities and shelter capacities in Lebanon and neighbouring countries.
