IndiGo Announces Leadership Change
Pieter Elbers, the Chief Executive Officer of India’s largest airline IndiGo, has stepped down from his position months after a major operational disruption that left thousands of passengers stranded across multiple airports.
The airline confirmed the leadership change in a statement issued on March 11, 2026, stating that Elbers would be leaving the role following internal discussions with the company’s board.
Elbers had served as CEO of IndiGo since September 2022, after previously leading KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for several years.
Operational Crisis Sparked Passenger Chaos
The resignation comes months after a major operational meltdown in late 2025, when large-scale flight delays and cancellations disrupted IndiGo’s network and stranded passengers at airports across India.
The disruption occurred during a period of high travel demand and was attributed to a combination of crew shortages, aircraft scheduling problems, and technical issues affecting several flights.
Passengers reported waiting for hours at airports including Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, and Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport.
The situation drew widespread criticism from travelers and prompted scrutiny from India’s aviation regulator.
Aviation Regulator Sought Explanation
India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) sought explanations from IndiGo following the disruption.
Officials asked the airline to provide details on the causes of the delays and the measures being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The regulator also directed the airline to improve passenger communication and contingency planning during operational disruptions.
IndiGo’s Position in Indian Aviation
IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation, is the largest airline in India by market share and operates a fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft on domestic and international routes.
The airline carries millions of passengers every month and plays a central role in India’s aviation network.
Because of its dominant position, disruptions in IndiGo’s operations can have a significant impact on air travel across the country.
Board Begins Search for New CEO
Following Elbers’ departure, IndiGo’s board said it has begun the process of identifying a successor to lead the airline.
Company officials said an interim leadership arrangement will remain in place while the search for a new chief executive continues.
The airline also emphasized that operational stability remains its top priority as it continues expanding routes and fleet capacity.
Industry Watching Leadership Transition
Aviation analysts say the leadership change comes at a crucial time for IndiGo as the airline navigates rising fuel costs, increased competition, and rapid growth in India’s aviation market.
Experts note that maintaining operational reliability is essential for airlines, particularly during periods of high passenger demand.
For now, IndiGo has not disclosed further details about the timeline for appointing a permanent replacement for Elbers.
