Sharp Price Increase Announced Across Major Cities

India has witnessed a significant hike in commercial liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder prices, with rates increased by ₹195.50 for 19-kg cylinders, effective April 1. The revision comes amid rising global energy prices linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and disruptions in supply chains.

Following the hike, the price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder in Delhi has risen to ₹2,078.50, while Kolkata now sees rates around ₹2,208. Mumbai and Chennai have also recorded similar increases.

Iran Conflict Drives Global Energy Shock

The surge in LPG prices is closely tied to volatility in global crude oil markets caused by tensions in West Asia. Disruptions in key supply routes—particularly the Strait of Hormuz—have significantly impacted fuel availability and pricing worldwide.

Reports indicate that global oil prices have risen sharply in recent weeks, forcing Indian oil marketing companies to revise LPG rates in line with international benchmarks.

India, which depends heavily on LPG imports, is particularly vulnerable to such geopolitical disruptions, amplifying the domestic impact.

Commercial Sector Bears the Brunt

The latest price hike primarily affects the commercial sector, including hotels, restaurants, and small businesses that rely heavily on LPG for daily operations.

Industry stakeholders warn that rising fuel costs could lead to higher food prices and operational challenges. In several cities, eateries have already reported increased expenses and, in some cases, reduced activity due to supply constraints.

Domestic Consumers Spared—for Now

Despite the sharp increase in commercial LPG rates, domestic cooking gas prices remain unchanged. A 14.2-kg household LPG cylinder continues to cost around ₹913 in Delhi, following a previous revision earlier in March.

Officials have not announced any immediate changes to domestic LPG pricing, though analysts caution that continued global volatility could influence future revisions.

Repeated Hikes Reflect Ongoing Crisis

This latest increase follows another hike of ₹114.50 per cylinder implemented on March 1, indicating a continuing upward trend in fuel costs.

Experts note that the frequency of revisions highlights the intensity of the current energy crisis and India’s exposure to global market fluctuations.

Government Monitoring Situation

The government has acknowledged the pressure on fuel supply chains and is reportedly taking steps to stabilize availability. However, no comprehensive policy intervention regarding LPG pricing has been officially announced.

With geopolitical tensions ongoing, the outlook for fuel prices remains uncertain. Market observers suggest that further volatility cannot be ruled out if supply disruptions persist.
