A French humanitarian worker was among three people killed in a drone strike in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to statements from the rebel group operating in the region.

The attack occurred in North Kivu province, an area that has experienced intensified fighting between government forces and the rebel movement known as M23. The group said the strike targeted a location where civilians and aid personnel were present.

Local officials and humanitarian organizations reported that two other individuals were also killed in the explosion. Authorities said investigations are underway to determine the circumstances of the strike and confirm responsibility.

The eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been the site of recurring armed conflict involving government troops and several armed groups. The region around North Kivu, near the borders with Rwanda and Uganda, has been particularly affected by violence.

Witnesses reported that the drone strike hit a building or area where aid workers had been operating, causing casualties and damage to nearby structures.

Humanitarian agencies operating in the region said the security situation has made it increasingly difficult to deliver assistance to displaced communities.

Role of the M23 Rebel Group

The M23 movement has been involved in clashes with the Congolese army for several years, and fighting intensified again in recent months. The group has accused government forces of carrying out the drone strike that killed the aid worker.

Officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo have not yet issued a detailed public statement confirming responsibility for the attack.

Regional observers say the growing use of drones in the conflict reflects an escalation in military tactics as both sides attempt to gain control of territory in eastern Congo.

Humanitarian organizations have warned that escalating violence in eastern Congo has displaced hundreds of thousands of people and strained relief efforts.

The United Nations and international aid groups have repeatedly called for greater protection of civilians and humanitarian workers operating in the region.

Diplomatic efforts by regional governments and international mediators have attempted to reduce tensions between the Congolese government and armed groups, but clashes continue across several areas of North Kivu.

Officials said investigations into the drone strike are ongoing, and the identity of the French aid worker killed in the attack had not yet been publicly released at the time of reporting.
