A French humanitarian worker was among three people killed in a drone attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to statements released by the rebel group operating in the region.
The strike occurred in North Kivu province, an area that has experienced escalating clashes between government forces and the rebel movement known as March 23 Movement. The group said the attack targeted an area where civilians and aid personnel were present.
Local officials and humanitarian organizations reported that two additional individuals were killed in the blast. Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances of the strike and confirm responsibility.
Incident in a Conflict-Hit Region
Witnesses reported that the drone strike hit a structure or nearby area where humanitarian workers had been operating, causing casualties and damage to surrounding buildings.
Humanitarian agencies working in the region said the security environment has made it increasingly difficult to deliver assistance to communities displaced by ongoing fighting.
North Kivu province, located near the borders with Rwanda and Uganda, has been one of the epicenters of violence in eastern Congo.
Role of the M23 Rebel Movement
The M23 movement has been engaged in clashes with the Congolese army for years, with fighting intensifying again in recent months.
Rebel representatives accused government forces of conducting the drone strike, though officials from the Democratic Republic of Congo have not yet confirmed responsibility.
Regional observers say the increasing use of drones in the conflict reflects a shift in military tactics as both sides seek to gain an advantage in contested areas.
Growing Humanitarian Concerns
Humanitarian organizations warn that the escalating conflict in eastern Congo has displaced hundreds of thousands of civilians and complicated relief efforts.
The United Nations and international aid groups have repeatedly called for greater protection of civilians and humanitarian workers operating in the region.
Diplomatic initiatives by regional governments and international mediators have sought to reduce tensions between the Congolese government and armed groups, but clashes continue in several parts of North Kivu.
Officials said the identity of the French aid worker killed in the attack had not yet been publicly released at the time of reporting.
