Massive Drug-Smuggling Vessel Discovered in Protected Area
Troops from the Ecuadorian Armed Forces have discovered a 35-metre-long “narco-submarine” hidden inside a protected nature reserve in Ecuador, authorities said, in what officials described as one of the largest clandestine drug-smuggling vessels found in the country.
The semi-submersible vessel was located during a military operation targeting organized crime networks operating along Ecuador’s Pacific coast. Officials said the craft was concealed within dense vegetation near a river system inside the reserve.
According to the military, the vessel was still under construction and had not yet been launched when troops discovered it.
Operation Reveals Sophisticated Smuggling Infrastructure
Military officials said the submarine measured approximately 35 meters in length, making it significantly larger than many other vessels previously seized in the region.
Authorities believe the craft was designed to transport large quantities of cocaine through Pacific shipping routes toward Central America and Mexico.
Semi-submersible vessels, commonly known as narco-subs, are frequently used by drug trafficking organizations because they travel low in the water and are difficult to detect by radar.
Investigators also found tools, construction materials, and equipment at the hidden site, suggesting the vessel had been built in a makeshift jungle shipyard.
Ecuador’s Growing Role in Regional Drug Trade
Authorities say Ecuador has increasingly become a key transit hub for international cocaine trafficking due to its location between major drug-producing countries and shipping routes to North America and Europe.
Criminal organizations often move drugs through Ecuador’s ports and coastal regions before sending shipments across the Pacific Ocean or through Central America.
In recent years, Ecuadorian security forces have reported several seizures of semi-submersible vessels, although most were smaller than the one discovered in the nature reserve.
The discovery highlights the growing sophistication of drug trafficking operations in the region.
Investigation Into Drug Trafficking Network
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine which criminal organization was responsible for constructing the vessel.
Military officials said they are coordinating with police and prosecutors to identify suspects connected to the operation.
No arrests had been announced as of the time of publication.
Officials also indicated that the discovery could lead investigators to additional hidden facilities used by drug traffickers in remote parts of the country.
The Ecuadorian government has intensified anti-drug operations in recent years as organized crime groups expand their activities across the region.
