A driver who was livestreaming on TikTok at the time of a collision has been charged after fatally striking a pedestrian, police said, underscoring growing concerns about distracted driving fueled by social media use.
According to investigators, the crash occurred late at night when the driver’s vehicle hit a pedestrian crossing the roadway. Officers reviewing evidence determined that the driver was actively broadcasting live on TikTok moments before and during the incident. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene despite emergency medical efforts.
Police said the driver has been charged with vehicular manslaughter and additional offenses related to distracted driving. Court records indicate prosecutors plan to argue that livestreaming constituted reckless behavior, diverting the driver’s attention from the road at a critical moment.
Authorities confirmed that video from the livestream, along with phone data and traffic camera footage, is being examined as part of the case. Investigators are also working to determine whether speed or impairment played a role.
Safety advocates say the case highlights the dangers of interacting with phones while driving, particularly live video features that encourage prolonged engagement. Law enforcement officials reiterated warnings that using social media behind the wheel can carry severe legal consequences, including felony charges when fatalities occur.
The driver is expected to make an initial court appearance in the coming days. The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of family.
