Multi-State Operation Targets Alleged Lashkar Network
The Delhi Police on Sunday announced the arrest of eight individuals allegedly linked to a terror module associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba. The arrests were carried out in coordinated operations across Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, officials confirmed.
According to a statement issued by the Special Cell of Delhi Police, the accused were detained following weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering. Raids were conducted at multiple locations in both states, leading to the seizure of electronic devices, documents, and materials described as “incriminating” by investigators.
Police have not publicly disclosed the identities of the arrested individuals, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation. All eight suspects are expected to be produced before a special court under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Seizures and Alleged Activities
Officials stated that preliminary interrogation indicates the group was allegedly engaged in recruitment, dissemination of extremist propaganda, and facilitating communication with handlers based outside India. Digital forensic teams are examining seized mobile phones, laptops, and storage devices to determine the scope of the network.
A senior Delhi Police officer said that the module was under active monitoring after intelligence inputs suggested attempts to radicalize vulnerable individuals through encrypted messaging platforms. “The investigation is at a sensitive stage. Further details will be shared after verification of digital evidence,” the officer said.
Authorities have not confirmed whether any planned attack was imminent. They emphasized that the operation was preventive in nature.
Cross-State Coordination and Security Measures
The operation involved coordination between Delhi Police’s Special Cell and state police units in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Officials confirmed that intelligence sharing mechanisms were activated to facilitate simultaneous action.
Sources indicated that central agencies, including the National Investigation Agency, have been briefed about the arrests. It remains unclear whether the NIA will formally take over the case.
Security has been heightened in sensitive locations in the concerned states as a precautionary measure. Police have increased surveillance in identified areas while conducting follow-up searches.
Legal Proceedings Under UAPA
The arrested individuals are being questioned regarding their alleged roles within the module. Investigators are compiling evidence under provisions of the UAPA, which addresses unlawful activities and terror-related offenses.
Legal experts note that cases involving cross-border linkages require substantiated evidence of communication, funding, and operational intent. Authorities stated that forensic audits and cyber-analysis are underway to trace potential financial transactions.
Delhi Police reiterated that all actions have been conducted in accordance with due process. Family members of the accused have been informed, officials said.
Official Appeal for Public Cooperation
Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to local authorities. Officials emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and cautioned against circulating unverified information on social media.
No further arrests have been announced at the time of publication. Authorities stated that additional disclosures will depend on the outcome of interrogations and forensic findings.
