Cross country superstar Johannes Høsflot Klæbo claimed his 100th career World Cup victory with a triumph in the men’s sprint on Norwegian home soil in Trondheim on Friday.
Klæbo clocked 2 minutes 59.89 seconds in the sprint final and reached the 100 mark on his second attempt after missing out on the win last weekend in Finland.
The Norwegian has dominated the sport in recent years, winning five Olympic and 15 world championship gold medals and five overall World Cup titles so far in his career.
He’s the first male cross country skier to reach 100 wins. Only compatriot and eight-time Olympic champion Marit Bjørgen had achieved this feat before.
Team-mate Oskar Opstad Vike was 0.31s behind in second, while Sweden’s Alvar Myhlback was third.
The Swedish team had a much better result in the women’s sprint, in which Johanna Hagström led a podium sweep ahead of team-mates Emma Ribom and Linn Svahn. Sweden also took fourth place thanks to Jonna Sundling.
In the Nordic combined, 2024 World Cup champion Ida Marie Hagen won the women’s season opener in Trondheim.
The Norwegian soared from sixth place in the jumps to victory after clocking 14:31.5 minutes in the 5-kilometre cross country portion.
Defending champion Nathalie Armbruster of Germany was second and Alexa Brabec of the United States completed the podium.
Norway’s Ingrid Laate, who led the standings after the jumps, finished eighth.
Defending champion Nika Prevc claimed a ski jumping World Cup win at the women’s large hill in Wisla, Poland.
The Slovenian scored a total of 259.7 points with jumps of 128 and 130 metres to beat team-mate Nika Vodan by 12.8 points. Eirin Maria Kvandal of Norway completed the podium.
World Cup leader Nozomi Maruyama of Japan was fourth following a third place in Thursday’s large hill.
